11-time NBA champion Bill Russell passes away at age 88

Bill Russell, a key member of the Boston Celtics’ dynasty in the 1950s and 1960s, the only NBA player to win 11 titles, and the first Black head coach in the league, passed away on Sunday. He was 88. Russell passed away with his wife Jeannine at his side, according to a social media message from his family.

“Bill’s wife Jeannine and his large network of friends and family are grateful that you have kept him in your prayers. Maybe you’ll remember one or two of the memorable occasions he shared with us, or you’ll remember his characteristic chuckle as he enjoyed sharing the true tale of how those events played out,” the statement said. “And with Bill’s unwavering, honorable, and consistently positive devotion to principle, we really hope that everyone of us may discover a new way to act or speak up. That would be our beloved Russell’s final and unending victory.” Adam Silver, the commissioner of the NBA, said that he was the greatest champion in all of team sports.
