Some of the best golfers in the world will make their way to Irving, Texas and the TPC Four Seasons Resort for this week’s AT&T Byron Nelson. This year’s Masters champion Sergio Garcia returns as the defending champion at this event but he will have some tough competition with Dustin Johnson, Jordan Spieth, Jason Day and Brooks Koepka all looking to bump him off his throne.
Taking a look at the FedEx Cup standings, Dustin Johnson is our leader entering the week. He has a total of 2,214 points and is the only golfer to surpass the 2000-point mark. In second place is Hideki Matsuyama, who has had a very strong season. He has 1,865 points so far. Justin Thomas is in third place with 1,855 points while Jon Rahm is in fourth place with 1,499. Rounding out the top five is Pat Perez, who has 1,381 points. Surprisingly absent from the top five is Jordan Spieth and Jason Day.
We took the time to break down the numbers in order to figure out the best combination of star talent and strong value picks for DraftKings tournaments. Here is a look at the optimal lineup for this week’s PGA DraftKings fantasy competitions.
Brooks Koepka, $10,200
Koepka very nearly won this event last year when he was forced in to a playoff with Garcia and eventually fell apart. Now he gets his shot at redemption and there is a good chance he can win this event outright over 72 holes. Koepka has been in excellent form of late including finishing tied for 11th at The Masters and then tied for 16th at The PLAYERS Championship last week. His consistency combined with his resume at Irving makes Koepka a strong pick for this week’s DraftKings competitions.
Patrick Reed, $9,400
Reed missed three straight cuts at the Shell Houston Open, The Masters and the Valero Texas Open. However, he is back on track of late including top-25 finishes at both the Wells Fargo Championship and at The PLAYERS Championship. Reed’s price is probably a little lower than it could be based on his struggles earlier in the year. At just $9.4K, Reed should be an excellent option for this week’s DraftKings competitions.
Tony Finau, $9,200
Finau really struggled at The PLAYERS Championship but he has been pretty solid overall so far this season. Finau has registered four top-10 finishes so his overall numbers are pretty strong for this season. Meanwhile, Finau has had a decent history at the AT&T Byron Nelson where he has registered two top-15 finishes. Finau fits the bill based in large part on the fact that he loves to play in Irving and he is still a tier below the highest-priced options on the board.
Ian Poulter, $7,600
Poulter’s inconsistency has been an issue this season. However, he is coming off a tied-2nd finish at The PLAYERS Championship and he made that strong impression in conditions that could be similar to what he experiences this week. If Poulter could handle the conditions at the TPC Four Seasons in a similar manner then he could surprise with another top-10 finish at the AT&T Byron Nelson this week.
Hudson Swafford, $6,900
With just over $13 million left over to spend on our final two positions, we decided to go very low with a couple of smart sleeper picks. Swafford has struggled with consistency but his ball striking has been excellent and he has recorded three top-10 finishes already this season. He isn’t an elite option by any means. However, at under $7K Swafford should be an excellent sleeper value pick at the Byron Nelson Classic.
Jonathan Randolph, $6,700
Randolph missed the cut twice in his first three tournaments of 2017. However, in his last three events he hasn’t finished any worse than tied for 27th. Randolph’s turnaround has been very impressive and if he can keep it up he could surprise as an excellent value pick for this week’s DraftKings competitions. Randolph finished in the top-10 at the Wells Fargo Championship in his last start. If he produces another top-10 finish this week then he could really make a major difference in our DraftKings lineup for the Byron Nelson Classic.
