2017 EPGA Lyoness Open Preview

Lyoness Open

The European Tour shifts to Atzenbrugg, Austria and the Diamond Golf Course for this week’s Lyoness Open. There will be a ton of pressure on the shoulders of the hometown favorite and sports betting favorite Bernd Wiesberger to deliver in his native country. The reality is that the Austrian likely wouldn’t even have played this week if it wasn’t for the location of the event. With the U.S. Open next week in the United States, Wiesberger will have to play this tournament and then travel overseas for the next major championship of the season. With so many of the world’s top golfers resting and preparing for the U.S. Open, Wiesberger will be the clear favorite to win the Lyoness Open this week.

Details

Event: Lyoness Open

Category: European Tour

Date: June 8-11

Location: Diamond Golf Course, Atzenbrugg, Austria

Bernhard Langer won the inaugural edition of this tournament but after just seven editions the event was relegated to the Challenge Tour. Eventually, Austrian golfing legend Markus Brier came along and revitalized the popularity of the sport and the desire for the country to host this tournament again. The Lyoness Open has been a staple on the European Tour ever since with Ashun Wu the defending champion.

Past Five Winners

2016: Ashun Wu -13

2015: Chris Wood -15

2014: Mikael Lundberg -12 (Playoff)

2013: Joost Luiten -17

2012: Bernd Wiesberger -19

What To Know About The Course

The Lyoness Open has been hosted by the Diamond Country Club every year since 2010 so we should have a good handle on what to expect this week. Wiesberger hit the ball further than anyone else off the tee when he won here in 2012 but Driving Distance won’t be the most important statistic this week. The average ranking for Driving Accuracy among winners here is 15th and no winner has ranked worse than 24th in that department so that’s likely the more important number. It’s also worth considering the fact that no winner has ranked worse than eighth in Greens In Regulation here with the exception of the 2014 winner Mikael Lundberg. Driving Accuracy will be important but GIR numbers will be the prime statistic to consider at this week’s Lyoness Open.

The Field

With the defending champion Ashun Wu listed at +12600 odds to win this event outright, the sportsbooks are clearly banking on somebody else stepping up to win the Lyoness Open. Wiesberger is the obvious favorite at +600 odds. Meanwhile, Joost Luiten is listed at +1300 odds with Gregory Bourdy at +2300 and James Morrison at +3100 odds to win outright. Julian Suri, Jaco van Zyl and Benjami Hebert are all available at decent numbers for this week’s Lyoness Open.

A Good Matchup To Bet: Joost Luiten over Gregory Bourdy

Luiten’s course form figures are pretty impressive as he has finished sixth or higher in each of his four starts in the Lyoness Open. He hasn’t performed at this best on the European Tour this season but considering his success here in the past there is a good chance that this is the week that he heats up. Bourdy is listed at better odds than he likely should be based on the lack of big names at this week’s event so he’s a good choice to fade betting on Luiten at this week’s Lyoness Open.

Top-Five Pick: Bernd Wiesberger

It seems silly to take anybody other than Wiesberger to finish in the top-five at this event. The native Austrian is the most talented golfer in this week’s field and he should be motivated to put on a show for the home fans. Wiesberger has already won this event and finished as the runner-up here with top-10 finishes in all but two of his six appearances. Wiesberger clearly deserves to be the sports betting favorite to win the Lyoness Open. We will settle for taking him as an obvious top-five pick.
