2017 European Tour Andalucia Valderrama Masters Preview

Valderrama Masters

Tyrrell Hatton is putting on a late-season clinic as he went back-to-back on the European Tour, following his victory at the Alfred Dunhill Links Championship with another victory at the Italian Open. Next, the European Tour will head to Spain for the Andalucia Valderrama Masters, which returns to the schedule after a six-year absence. It will be held at Valderrama Golf Club, which hosted the event in 2010.

The Field

There’s a star-studded field at the Andalucia Valderrama Masters this week with two previous Masters champs in the field. Both Danny Willett and Sergio Garcia have won green jackets, and will be in the field. Jon Rahm, the No. 5 golfer in the world, will be the highest-ranked player in the field this week. He’s got some momentum going after finishing in a tie for 15th at the Italian Open last week. Some bettors might want to take a flier on Shane Lowry, who has played well recently. While he’s off a disappointing effort – he missed the cut last week – he has two seventh-place results in his last five outings. Keep an eye on Joost Luiten, who finished second at this event last season and has a little bit of momentum on his side with some somewhat decent results of late.

What To Know About The Course

Valdarrama opened in 1974 and it is a par-71 that was 7,001 yards last year for the Open de Espana, which was won by Andrew Johnston with a score of +1. It is a course that has hosted the Ryder Cup once in 1997, along with a World Golf Championship event in which Tiger Woods won with a -6. This isn’t a place that is going to have a -21 score like the Italian Open. This might be more about getting birdies when you can on the par-5s, and not making too many bogeys. Two of the three hardest holes at the Open de Espana came at #16 and #18, so the closing stretch might eat a few players up.

A Good Matchup To Bet: Jon Rahm over Sergio Garcia

Garcia finished solo third at Valderrama last year, shooting a final-round 67, and he was the host as well, so that shouldn’t be an excuse. But he has slowed down a little with a missed cut at the British Masters and a T-30 at the Italian Open. Rahm finished T-15 at the Italian Open for his fifth top-15 in a row, and four of those were top-10s in the FedEx Cup playoffs. This is also Rahm’s first professional tournament in his home country of Spain as he was born there, but played college golf at Arizona State. Unless nerves get the best of Rahm, he should play well here and beat Garcia, who does have familiarity of the course on his side.

Top-Five Pick: Nino Bertasio

Take a look at Bertasio, who has finished in the top 15 in three of his last four starts, and he finished T-10 at the Italian Open. He finished T-11 at the Open de Espana last year, so he is also familiar with the course and based on his form, he should be in line for a top-five and Bertasio might even shock the golf world with a win as he ranked 316th in the world. He’ll offer you great value with his odds, so take a shot on Nino Bertasio this week.
