2017 European Tour Omega European Masters Preview

Omega European Masters

Haydn Porteous won his first tournament of the 2017 European Tour season at the D+D Real Czech Masters. Now, the Tour switches to Switzerland for the Omega European Masters, which was the Swiss Open from 1905 to 1991, and it has been the European Masters ever since. It has also been held at the Crans-sur-Sierre Golf Club since 1939, and the field will be headlined by Luke Donald and Lee Westwood, both former winners here. There is a prize fund of over $3.2 million for the field in Switzerland.

Details

Event: Omega European Masters

Category: European Tour

Date: September 7th – September 10th

Location: Crans-sur-Sierre Golf Club, Crans-sur-Sierre, Switzerland

Every winning score has been in double figures since 1980, and -11 in 1981 has been the lowest score since then. You can definitely score low here, and it can be a close tournament as three of the last four editions have gone to a playoff.

Past Five Omega European Masters Winners

2016: Alexander Noren -17

2015: Danny Willett -17

2014: David Lipsky -18

2013: Thomas Bjorn -20

2012: Richie Ramsay -16

The Field

Alex Noren is the favorite at the Omega European Masters this week. That’s not overly surprising as he is the defending champion. He’s trailed closely by Tommy Fleetwood, who is second in line according to the odds. Fleetwood has mixed results of late as he placed a paltry 61st at the US Open but was 28th and 27th the Bridgestone Invitational and the 146th Open. He has two wins this year along with three other Top 5’s. Rounding out the Top 5 of the betting odds for this week’s field are Bernd Wiesberger, Matthew Fitzpatrick and Richie Ramsay. It’s interesting to note that while Noren and Fleetwood are at around 10/1, there is a big drop-off after them as no other golfer is even inside of 20/1.

We’re looking at some pretty low scores this week. Keep in mind that the winning golfer over the last five years has had a score of -16 or lower.

What To Know About The Course

Crans-sur-Sierre Golf Club is a par-70 course which is 6,848 yards, and this will be the 71st time that this tournament has been held here; only Augusta National and the Masters have been paired together more times with 81. It is almost 5,000 feet above sea level in the Swiss Alps, which makes walking the course a little difficult, but it is an absolutely beautiful place to play golf.

A Good Matchup To Bet: Thomas Detry over Luke Donald

It is tempting to pick Donald, who won here in 2004. However, he hasn’t played great at all as of late, missing the cut in seven of his last 10 events and he is coming off a T-49 at the Northern Trust on the PGA Tour. Detry finished T-54 in the Czech Republic, but he finished T-9 in Denmark two weeks ago and T-9 at the Match Play event prior to that. At 24, Detry is on the way up the ladder and at 39, the former #1 in the world, Donald, is on his way down. Go with Detry at -120 in this matchup over Donald, who is rated at +100.

Top-Five Pick: Tyrrell Hatton

Hatton has been off since the PGA Championship, where he missed the cut for the sixth time in seven events. A break might be all that he needed as Hatton was excellent to start 2017, racking up four top-10s before his recent slide. Even though Hatton missed the cut here in 2016, he had a solo third and a T-3 in his two starts in Switzerland before that, so if he is going to break out, this is the week that he has to do it. There is no pressure on Hatton to win, he just needs to make it from there and if he can do that, he should have confidence for Saturday and Sunday.
