2017 European Tour Turkish Airlines Open Preview

Justin Rose

The WGC-HSBC Championship counts on the European Tour calendar, and last week’s event was a wild one as Justin Rose overcame an eight-stroke deficit to defeat Dustin Johnson. Next, the European Tour heads to Turkey for the Turkish Airlines Open, which was started in 2013. Thorbjorn Olesen is the defending champion at this event.

The Field

If you’re looking for some value in the field this week, consider Ian Poulter. Although he started the year outside the Top 200, he has been playing very well since. He finished tied for second at the Players and then third at the Canadian Open, which means he’s landed back in the Top 50. He’s done pretty well at this event of late, finishing 5th, 2nd and 16th.

Joost Luiten might be someone else you consider. He’s coming off a second-place result at the Valderrama Masters. Shane Lowry looks like another long shot with a chance as he’s played well of late. He tied for 12th at Valderrama, which was yet another quality result for him. He also did well at the British Masters (7th) and the Wyndham Championship (7th).

What To Know About The Course

Regnum Carya Golf Club is a part of a resort which is located on the southwestern coast of Turkey, and it hosted the tournament for the first time in 2016. It is a par-71 course that can tip out to 7,200 yards with lots of trees, and it played as the second-easiest course on the European Tour last year. There is a five-hole stretch from the seventh to the 12th holes that ranked from 12th to 18th in terms of most difficult; but then you have the par-4 505-yard 10th hole that was the toughest on the course last year. The three-hole closing stretch, a trio of par-4s, ranked third, fourth and seventh in difficulty in 2016.

A Good Matchup To Bet: Henrik Stenson over Justin Rose

Stenson is the underdog in this matchup at +110 against Rose at -130, and this is nothing against Rose, but that was an amazing comeback last week and it might have taken a lot out of him. Even though he didn’t play here last year, Stenson has a career scoring average of 68.0 at the Turkish Airlines Open and he finished T-2 last week in Shanghai as he looked well-rested and ready to go. Rose, on the other hand, might have exhausted himself chasing down Johnson and while he’ll probably still finish very well here, Stenso should get the better of him.

Top-Five Pick: Marc Warren

You could go with Dubuisson, who has won this event twice and also has a top-15 result here, although he finished T-47 here last year. But he has a pair of withdrawals and a missed cut in his last five starts, although Dubuisson has also finished solo third and T-12 during that time. Take Warren, who has finished solo second, T-15, T-4 and T-10 in his last four starts. He also finished T-47 in this event in 2016, but Warren is playing some very good golf right now and you can probably get good odds on a top-five finish for him, so take a chance.
