2017 Hero Indian Open Preview

The Hero Indian Open will move to a new venue this year with some of the best on the European Tour and Asian Tour competing at The Gary Player Course at the DLF Golf and Country Club in Gurgaon, India. After a couple of years at the Delhi Golf Club, the tournament decided to shake things up and move to a course that only opened in October of 2015. At around 7,650 yards, this course is much longer than the Delhi Golf Club so length of the tee will be that much more important at this year’s event.

Event Details

Event: Hero Indian Open

Category: European

Date: March 9-13

Location: The Gary Player Course, DLF Golf and Country Club, Gurgaon, India

With so many competitors taking to this course for the first time there is a good chance the familiarity angle will be thrown out the window this week. The defending champion SSP Chawrasia will not even compete in this event but it should be no surprise that the 2015 winner Anirban Lahiri is the sports betting favorite to win outright this week.

Past Five Winners

2016: SSP Chawrasia -15

2015: Anirban Lahiri -7 (Playoff)

2014: Siddikur Rahman -14

2013: Thaworn Wiratchant -14

2012: David Gleeson -20

What To Know About The Course

There is no doubt that length off the tee will be a major factor this week as those with the Driving Distance numbers should really benefit. Driving Accuracy should be just as important as this year’s entries attempt to navigate the brand new Gary Player Course. Greens In Regulation will undoubtedly factor in to the outcome as well with the golfers attempting to figure out this course on the fly as the rounds progress.

The Field

Lahiri is undoubtedly the obvious favorite this week at +700 odds as the feeling is he should have a significant edge over the rest of the field. However, there are some other intriguing options including Rafael Cabrera Bello, Peter Ulhlein and Jorge Campillo, who are all among the betting favorites to win this event outright. Kiradech Aphibarnrat and George Coetzee are available at decent value with both players listed at +2500 odds to win outright, although Coetzee might be a better option to fade after some of his recent disappointments.

A Good Matchup To Bet: Peter Ulhlein over George Coetzee

Ulhlein finished the Tshwane Open on fire with six birdies over his final 10 holes to finish fourth and if he can carry over the momentum from that performance then he should be confident at the Hero Indian Open this week. Meanwhile, George Coetzee is trending in the wrong direction after his horrific collapse around his home course last week and he could struggle to bounce back at a new course. Ulhlein is a decent pick to finish ahead of Coetzee in the head-to-head sports betting matchup so it makes sense to lock him in at this week’s event.

Top-Five Pick: Anirban Lahiri

With so many unknowns heading in to this week it makes a lot of sense to stick with a known commodity in Lahiri. The favorite to win this event outright should undoubtedly be in the mix for a top-five finish as the most reliable option on the board. Lahiri won this tournament two years ago and was the runner-up here last year so he should be in line for another strong finish playing on his home soil in his native India.
