2017 LPGA Tour Cambia Portland Classic Preview

Camia Portland Classic

Park Sung-hyun won her second tournament of the year at the Canadian Pacific Women’s Open last week, and now the LPGA Tour heads down the stretch towards the final major. The Cambia Portland Classic is the second-last tournament before the Evian Championship, and this tournament has a storied history. It was first played in 1972, and then it was a team event from 1977 to 1982 before going back to the individual side. It is held at Columbia Edgewater Country Club, but it has been played at a few other courses in the Portland area. The purse for this year is $1.3 million.

Details

Event: Cambia Portland Classic

Category: LPGA

Date: August 31st – September 3rd

Location: Columbia Edgewater Country Club, Portland, Oregon

Since 2002, only twice has the winner failed to get to double digits, and only once at Columbia Edgewater. However, beware on Sunday as only one player in the top five shot better than 70 in the final round.

Past Five Winners

2016: Brooke Henderson -14

2015: Brooke Henderson -21

2014: Austin Ernst -14

2013: Suzann Pettersen -20

2012: Mika Miyazato -13

The Field

Lexi Thompson enters the week as the favorite to win. That’s understandable as she’s No. 2 in the Rolex Ranking and the CME Ranking. She is on fire of late as she tied for 11th last week, but has placed seventh or better in four of the last six weeks – including three second-place results. That doesn’t do you many favors when you tie for second when you have her to win. So Yeon Ryu (+805) is in second place in terms of the odds and Brooke M. Henderson (+905) is in third. Those are the only players inside of 10/1. Stacy Lewis is in fourth place in terms of the odds. She’s No. 18 in the Rolex Ranking and 16th in the CME Ranking. She hasn’t won this year but she’s been close. She has four Top 12’s in her last seven outings, so she’s been close. The only other players inside of 20/1 are Amy Yang (+1250), In Gee Chun (+1550) and Hyo Joo Kim (+1850).

What To Know About The Course

Columbia Edgewater is a par-72 that is 6,476 yards and was founded in 1924. It has played host to the Cambia Portland Classic over 30 times and usually draws a solid field. It has also been the home of a PGA Tour event, the Portland Open Invitational. Low scores can be shot here, but there are about 60 bunkers around the course and the rough can be surprisingly tough to play from.

A Good Matchup To Bet: Lexi Thompson Over So Yeon Ryu

Thompson has been off since the Solheim Cup, in which she played well for the winning United States team despite fighting a virus. Ryu placed T-12 at the Canadian Pacific Women’s Open, so the edge here goes to Thompson at -125 just based on rest, and it’s the easy call to go with a player that has Thompson’s length. That can really help her cut the golf course down a notch. If she can keep the ball in the fairway off the tee, Thompson has a great chance to win the tournament. This should be a fun battle to watch between two of the top players on the LPGA Tour right now.

Top-Five Pick: Brooke Henderson

It might be too much to ask Henderson to win this tournament for a third straight year, but she’ll definitely want to bounce back after struggling at the Canadian Pacific Women’s Open. She put a lot of pressure on herself as the tournament was played close to her hometown and she barely made the cut, and then shot a 63 on Saturday. She knows this course, she knows where to miss and her -21 score in 2015 (when she qualified on Monday to make the tournament as a 17-year-old) is the course record. Henderson will be in the mix for this event on Sunday, that’s a certainty.
