The LPGA will make its way to Bedminster, New Jersey and the Trump National Golf Club for the U.S. Women’s Open this week. It will be interesting to see if there is any political sentiment as the players visit a golf course that has the ‘Trump’ name on it.
This will be the third major championship of the LPGA season. Brittany Lang will return as the defending champion at this tournament where she will face some tough competition once again. Lang won last year’s U.S. Women’s Open in a playoff over Anna Nordqvist. However, with another absolutely loaded field she won’t even be considered among the sports betting favorites to win this week. Let’s take a closer look at this week’s event.
Details
Event: U.S. Women’s Open
Category: LPGA
Date: July 13-16
Location: Trump National Golf Club, Bedminster, New Jersey
This tournament will feature the strongest field of the year so far with the entire top 75 on the LPGA’s priority list set to compete. There is bound to be some extra attention on this year’s event thanks to the tournament’s location. There have already been a number of articles written about the potential for President Trump to make an appearance and it will be on the individual golfers to rise above any potential controversy and ignore the outside noise.
Past Five Winners
2016: Brittany Lang -6 (Playoff)
2015: Chun In-gee -8
2014: Michelle Wie -2
2013: Inbee Park -8
2012: Choi Na-yeon -7
What To Know About The Course
Outside of the firestorm that is attached to the Trump name, the venue for this week’s tournament will be extremely challenging. No U.S. Women’s Open winner has produced a double-digit under par score at this event since Meg Mallon did it back in 2004 and the fact that many in this year’s field don’t have much experience at Trump National will make things even more challenging. Scrambling and Putting statistics will once again be extremely important this week.
The Field
The field for this week is absolutely loaded with all of the top contenders on the LPGA Tour taking their shot at a major championship. Lexi Thompson is the sports betting favorite to win outright at +1000 odds but she will have some tough competition. Inbee Park and World No. 1 So Yeon Ryu are listed at +1200 odds to win, followed by Amy Yang at +1600. Sung Hyn Park, Stacy Lewis and In Gee Chun are all in the mix among the sports betting favorites as well. World No. 2 Ariya Jutanugarn is listed at +2500 odds while Lydia Ko is available at +3300. The defending U.S. Women’s Open champion Lang is listed at a ridiculous +125000 to repeat here this year.
A Good Matchup To Bet: Ariya Jutanugarn over Brooke Henderson
It wasn’t that long ago that Jutanugarn was considered among the favorites to win outright every single week on the LPGA tour. While she is in a bit of a slump, she has all of the tools to produce an exceptional outing this week and challenge for the win. Meanwhile, Henderson has been the better golfer of late and we can use that to our advantage in terms of the sports betting odd fading her against Jutanugarn. Both golfers are capable of playing at a high level this week but we like Jutanugarn to surprise and challenge for the outright victory with a better score than Henderson.
Top-Five Pick: Lexi Thompson
No golfer has more top-five finishes on the LPGA Tour than the six that Thompson has recorded this season. Thompson has climbed to No. 3 in the Rolex Rankings and a victory this week could push her to No. 1. Thompson has the arsenal to compete for the win. At the very least, we expect her to produce another top-five finish in the U.S. Women’s Open this week.
