The FedEx Cup Playoffs started with a bang as Dustin Johnson defeated Jordan Spieth in a playoff at the Northern Trust Open at Glen Oaks. Next, the top 100 in the standings will head to TPC Boston for the Dell Technologies Championship, which starts on Friday and ends on Monday thanks to Labor Day. This tournament started in 2003 and has always been held at TPC Boston, and then became a part of the FedEx Cup Playoffs in 2007. The top 70 in the standings will head to the BMW Championship next weekend, but there is also a prize pool of $8.5 million on the table. All eyes will be on the big boys who duked it out last week (Johnson and Spieth) and both are the leading favorites to win this event.
Details
Event: Dell Technologies Championship
Category: PGA
Date: September 1-4
Location: TPC Boston, Norton, Massachusetts
It seems as though -15 has been the magic number for the last few years as the last three winners have gotten that score. Olin Browne’s -14 from 2005 is the highest score to win, and -20 or over has been reached five times. It is definitely a course where you can score.
Past Five Winners
2016: Rory McIlroy -15
2015: Rickie Fowler -15
2014: Chris Kirk -15
2013: Henrik Stenson -22
2012: Rory McIlroy -20
The Field
Dustin Johnson is the favorite this week after getting the win last week at the Northern Trust Open. He has had a pretty good run over the last month, placing first, 13th, 17th and eight over his last four starts. It’s not so surprising that second in line to win the Dell Technologies Championship is Jordan Spieth, who fought it out with Johnson last week. Spieth ended up in second place but has been red hot of late. Prior to the Northern Trust, he had finished in 28th, 13th, first and first. There are four golfers on the board that are tied with the same price at +1250 and that’s Hideki Matsuyama, Rory McIlroy, Jason Day, and Rickie Fowler. The only other two golfers that are priced inside of 20/1 are Jon Rahn (+1650) and Justin Thomas (+1850).
What To Know About The Course
TPC Boston usually plays at a solid stroke under par, and if the weather is good, the players can just shoot at flags all day long. Holes #12 and #13 have been changed, with #12 coming in at 510 yards, but these players won’t be bothered by that. #13 is actually shorter at 447 yards, but there are more bunkers around the green. But no matter how many renovations happen here, the players always seem to come out on top at this par-71 course that is now stretched out to 7,342 yards.
A Good Matchup To Bet: Dustin Johnson over Jordan Spieth
Last week’s back-nine showdown was a joy to behold for golf fans as, arguably, the two best players in the world went head-to-head and into a playoff. However, Johnson is the pick here at -130 over Spieth at -105, because no matter how smart Spieth is when it comes to course management, Johnson’s length gives him the edge. His 341-yard drive on the first playoff hole gave him a wedge into the green and when you can drive the ball like that, it doesn’t matter. And if he makes putts like he did to save par on #18? Johnson is almost unstoppable. Johnson also has three top-10 finishes at TPC Boston.
Top-Five Pick: Paul Casey (+510)
Casey has played some solid golf this season and turned up as of late, posting three top-five finishes in his last five starts; the other two finishes were T-13 and T-11. He also led this tournament in 2016 going into Monday and while he lost, that serves as a good lesson for Casey, who is a fantastic golfer from tee to green. As with most golfers, it is all about the putter for Casey, who is 39th in first-round putting, but 165th in fourth-round putting.
