What To Know About The Course
The Northern Trust returns to the beautiful Glen Oaks Club course for the 2017 edition of this tournament. Unlike last year’s event at Riviera, putting should be a little easier at this course. Driving Accuracy and Scrambling numbers should be two important statistics to consider when evaluating this week’s field. Consistency on the greens will also be very important as six of the last seven winners have recorded scores in the double-digits.
The Field
Matsuyama is currently the sports betting favorite to win The Northern Trust at +1000 odds. Matsuyama’s consistency has been very impressive and it’s not a major surprise that he gets the nod at the top of the field for this week’s event. Meanwhile, Jordan Spieth is currently listed at +1200 odds, although some sites have him at +1000 as well. Dustin Johnson is in the mix as a +1200 pick, followed by Rickie Fowler and Rory McIlroy at +1400 odds. The 2015 winner Day is listed at +1800 odds to win outright. Brooks Koepka, Justin Thomas and Henrik Stenson round out the list of sports betting favorites for this week’s tournament.
A Good Matchup To Bet: Rickie Fowler over Dustin Johnson
For as talented as Johnson is, he has definitely struggled over the past couple of months with just a single top-10 finish in his last eight starts. It might not take much for D.J. to flip the switch but he hasn’t done it yet so we are comfortable fading him against Fowler at decent value this week. Fowler has been very consistent throughout the year and he is coming off back-to-back top-10 finishes at the WGC-Bridgestone Invitational and the PGA Championship. Considering their recent numbers and the sports betting odds, there is good value betting Fowler to produce a better result than Johnson at The Northern Trust this week.
Top-Five Pick: Jordan Spieth
While it’s tempting to bet on Matsuyama to deliver another top-five finish this week, we decide to roll with this year’s Open Championship winner Spieth. The 24-year-old wasn’t at his best at the PGA Championship but he still managed to produce a top-30 finish. Spieth has improved his overall consistency this season including three wins and eight top-10 finishes in 19 starts. He is undoubtedly be motivated to retake his FedEx Cup crown. A win at The Northern Trust would definitely be a good place for Spieth to start. We’ll be looking for him to have a strong showing at this event.
