2017 PGA Wyndham Championship Preview

Wyndham Championship

The 2017 major championship schedule wrapped up this past Sunday with Justin Thomas clinching his first major title at the PGA Championship. Thomas is the third first-time major winner of the season after Sergio Garcia won The Masters and Brooks Koepka winning U.S. Open. Add in Jordan Spieth as this year’s winner of The Open and it makes for an impressive foursome. While the majors are in the books there is still plenty of golf to enjoy this year with just one more opportunity for players to book their spot in the FedEx Cup playoffs this week at Wyndham Championship.

Details

Event: Wyndham Championship

Category: PGA

Date: August 17-20

Venue: Sedgefield Country Club, Greensboro, North Carolina

The top 125 players in the rankings will qualify for the FedEx Cup, so the Wyndham Championship is extremely important for those that still have a shot at making it in. After this week, there will be four FedEx Cup events followed by the President’s Cup to officially close out the season. There won’t be as many big names in this week’s field. However, that could create the perfect opportunity to cash in with some strong value sports betting picks.

Past Five Winners

2016: Si-Woo Kim -21

2015: Davis Love III -17

2014: Camilo Villegas -17

2013: Patrick Reed -14

2012: Sergio Garcia -18

What To Know About The Course

The golfers that competed in the PGA Championship won’t have to travel far this week as the Wyndham Championship also takes place in North Carolina. The Sedgefield Country Club is a standard Par 70 by all accounts, measuring at 7,127 yards and played out on a typical heathland stretch. The course has become easier since the installation of the Bermudagrass in 2012. The fairways are easy to hit and while the average-sized greens can play fast there has been plenty of rain in North Carolina so that should slow things down this week. There will be an emphasis on strong iron play this week. Driving Distance isn’t as important as it has been in other tournaments earlier in the year but Driving Accuracy should once again be a statistic to consider this week.

The Field

The field for the Wyndham Championship isn’t anywhere near as talented as what we witnessed at the PGA Championship last week. However, there is still some talented competition with many golfers getting a final opportunity at redemption after disappointing seasons. Kevin Kisner and Chris Stroud will have a shot at redemption after they faltered late at Quail Hollow. Meanwhile, Henrik Stenson, Brandt Snedeker and Russell Knox will all be looking to play their way in to form for the FedEx Cup. Graeme McDowell, Sam Saunders, Geoff Ogilvy and Rory Sabatini are all familiar faces that will be looking to push their way in to the FedEx Cup playoffs with a victory this week.

A Good Matchup To Bet: Scott Brown over Byeong Hun An

Brown might not be listed among the sports betting favorites to win this tournament but he could surprise at the Wyndham Championship this week. Brown had a strong showing at the PGA Championship where he placed 13th so he should feel confident heading in to this tournament. At the end of May, he posted a T-12th at Colonial and before that he posted a pair of runner-up finishes at the Zurich Classic and Genesis Open. He is definitely flying under the radar heading in to this week but that makes him an even better value ahead of Byeong Hun An this week.

Top-Five Pick: Ryan Moore

Moore is listed at +2500 odds to win the Wyndham Championship outright, which is excellent value for a golfer that absolutely loves this course. Moore clinched his first PGA Tour win at Sedgefield back in 2009 and while he has struggled overall of late he is still feeling confident in his game heading in to this event. Moore fired four more rounds in the 60’s here last year so we feel confident that he can find his rhythm this week and deliver a strong performance. Even if he falls short of winning this event, he should place in the top-five at the Wyndham Championship.
