The PGA Tour heads next to the TPC Potomac at Avenel Farm for the Quicken Loans National. Billy Hurley III as the defending champion. It’s going to be an interesting event after a couple of weeks of intense action. Two weeks ago, we had the U.S. Open, which was a competitive match all the way through to the end. Last week, we had the Travelers Championship where Jordan Spieth stunned the gallery. After what looked like we might see a playoff, Spieth chipped-in from the bunker to earn the win.
This is the first PGA Tour event held at TPC Potomac at Avenel Farm since 2006 and it has since been overhauled, so it’s basically new to everyone. The greens are small, so iron play will be very important.
Rickie Fowler – $12,000
Fowler should be a good anchor man for your DraftKings team after taking a week off to recuperate from his T-5 at the U.S. Open. He is 32nd on the PGA Tour in greens-in-regulation, which gives him a lot of birdie chances and he is fourth in birdie average. This seems like the type of tournament that Fowler should walk away with, but there are a lot of tournaments like that on the Tour.
Patrick Reed – $11,100
Reed had a T-5 at the Travelers Championship, which was his fourth top-20 in six starts (and one of those was also a T-22 at the Players Championship). He has plenty of momentum coming into this one, even if he hasn’t been sealing the deal to earn wins. His greens-in-regulation isn’t the best as Reed ranks 142nd in that category, but he is 25th in total putting and the flat stick can take you a long way most weeks.
Marc Leishman – $9,800
Leishman finished T-17 at the Travelers Championship and has finished between T-13 and T-34 in each of his last five starts. He is 40th in greens-in-regulation and 38th in total putting, which always gives Leishman a chance, but he needs to be a little better off the tee. Leishman is 114th in driving accuracy. If he can find some power this week, he could be one of our better investments of the week.
Billy Horschel – $8,800
Horschel has been up and down this season, following three missed cuts in a row with a win at the AT&T Byron Nelson, then a T-34 was followed by a missed cut, then a T-4 at the FedEx St. Jude Classic, and then he missed the cut at the U.S. Open. By this pattern, Horschel should be due for a good week at the Quicken Loans National, and he doesn’t cost that much. Horschel is also 12th on the PGA Tour in greens-in-regulation.
David Lingmerth – $8,500
Lingmerth might be the steal of the week as he finished T-26 or better in five of his last six starts, which includes a T-21 at the U.S. Open. However, the biggest factor that you should consider when picking Lingmerth is that he won here before on the Web.com Tour in 2012 and the course is closer to what it is now than in 2006. He does have some momentum. He hasn’t been doing a ton of winning but he has been competitive. That’s the type of guy we want as we need to avoid anyone getting cut.
It’s a bit of a hidden secret as not many people follow the Web.com Tour but maybe this comes into play for us. Course history is always a big plus in terms of projecting future success.
Xander Schauffele – $8,400
Schauffele is another value player worth looking at for your DraftKings team. He is 24th in greens-in-regulation, and he finished T-5 at the U.S. Open, then followed it up with a T-14 at the Travelers Championship. At this price, you would do well to find a spot for him on your team, although he is a bit spotty off the tee, ranking 108th in driving accuracy. Still, Schauffele won’t cost you that much, so take a shot. We’re not expecting him to win this event. However, if he can make the cut and place in the Top 25, that would be of great use to us.
