Wow – what an incredible moment for this humble tournament played just before Wimbledon. While the elite pros such as Roger Federer, Novak Djokovic, and Rafael Nadal will be resting, the first round of this tournament is a blockbuster. The 28-player event will begin with a clash between two men who have both won three major championships, Stan Wawrinka and Andy Murray. The two greats both need a lot of match play and the chance to work their way into prime physical shape. Only one will get a chance to play a second match in Eastbourne. One will go home early. Murray was encouraging in his first-round loss to Nick Kyrgios at Queen’s Club. He played two hours and 40 minutes of tennis without extreme physical discomfort. He served well and hit his forehand with authority at times. The consistency wasn’t quite there, but Murray found a lot to build on before Wimbledon. Wawrinka will give him another good test of where his game and his fitness truly are.
The winner of the Murray-Wawrinka match will play Kyle Edmund in the second round. Edmund played a good match against Kyrgios at Queen’s Club but came up just short. The Brit will be a hard out in this tournament and has enjoyed a great 2018, making the Australian Open semifinals and doing well during the clay season.
Denis Shapovalov is another big name in this field. He has not won a match on grass this year and wants to be able to get on the board at this tournament. Merely one match win would be important for him.
Devonshire Park Lawn Tennis Club
The stadium court contains 8,000 seats in a familiar and storied facility that is part of the history of British tennis. This is also the stadium court at what became a dual-gender event within the past decade. Eastbourne has carved out a noticeable presence on the tennis calendar.
