Every time Aaron Rodgers does so much as bang his toe against a rogue ottoman, Mike McCarthy is completely exposed as an NFL head coach. Still, for whatever reason, the Green Bay Packers have decided to go into battle once again with the offensive version of Jeff Fisher at the helm.
Here’s another excellent selection of draft picks for McCarthy and his inept staff to completely waste.
Round 1, Pick 14: Josh Jackson, CB, Iowa
2017: 48 tackles, 0.5 tackles for a loss, eight interceptions, two returned for touchdowns, one forced fumble (6-1, 192 pounds)
The Packers drafted Kevin King last season and should add Jackson to their defense on the opposite side. Regardless of however anyone as the corners in this draft ranked, Jackson is the absolute best cover guy. He’s been doing it for years and is used to playing outside in less than ideal conditions.
Round 2, Pick 45: Anthony Miller, WR, Memphis
2017: 96 catches, 1,462 yards, 18 touchdowns (6-2, 201, 190 pounds)
Miller is a prototype West Coast receiver coming from a passing offense at Memphis. Green Bay cut Jordy Nelson this offseason and while they still have two solid starters in Devante Adams and Randall Cobb, this offense works best (when it works at all) with three starting wideouts on the field.
Round 3, Pick 76: Jamarco Jones, OT, Ohio State
6-5, 310 pounds
Rodgers was consistently fed the turf when David Bakhtiari and Byan Bulaga dealt with injuries in 2017. The Packers can’t take that chance again. Jones projects as a future starter and solid reserve as a rookie.
Round 4, Pick 101: Oren Burks, ILB, Vanderbilt
2017: 80 tackles, seven for a loss, one sack, one interception, three passes defended, one fumble recovery (6-3, 230 pounds)
Green Bay’s linebacker corps gets older by the minute. It’s time to start adding bodies and hoping one sticks. Burks was the best defensive player on one of the weaker SEC squads, but he still held his own against the nation’s top talent.
Round 4, Pick 133: Arrion Springs, CB, Oregon
2017: 42 tackles, four for a loss, one sack, one interception, 18 passes defended (5-11, 205 pounds)
The Packers have no shortage of corners on their roster, but that doesn’t mean they’re happy with any of them past King, Tramon Williams and Quinten Rollins. Springs adds another guy to the meeting room and one that’s produced big numbers at the NCAA level.
Round 5, Pick 138: Poona Ford, DT, Texas
2017: 31 tackles, eight for a loss, 1.5 sacks, one pass defended, one forced fumble (6-0, 305 pounds)
Adding Muhammad Wilkerson was a rare free agent move for the Packers. Still, this is a team with a total of five defensive linemen currently on the roster. That means they plan on adding them in the draft.
Round 5, Pick 172: Tyquan Lewis, DE, Ohio State
2017: 20 tackles, 9.5 for a loss, seven sacks, two passes defended, two forced fumbles (6-4, 265 pounds)
Lewis projects more as a pass rushing outside linebacker in Green Bay’s 3-4.
Round 5, Pick 174: Duke Dawson, CB, Florida
2017: 34 tackles, two for a loss, four interceptions, one returned for a touchdown, nine passes defended (5-10, 208 pounds)
Again, we’re looking for production and size. Dawson has both.
Round 6, Pick 186: Colby Gossett, OG, Appalachian State
6-5, 315 pounds
Gossett adds another reserve piece to an aging, and usually banged up, O-line.
Round 6, Pick 207: Davin Bellamy, OLB, Georgia
2017: 34 tackles, 7.5 for a loss, five sacks, three passes defended, two forced fumbles (6-5, 245 pounds)
Bellamy played legit OLB with Georgia, rushing the passer and playing in coverage. He’s got the size and wheels to go that route with Green Bay or move inside.
Round 7, Pick 232: Kevin Toliver II, CB, LSU
2017: 27 tackles, two for a loss, one sack, one interception, 10 passes defended, one forced fumble (6-3, 204 pounds)
Yep. Another corner. Have you looked at the Packers’ scrub-filled depth chart?
Round 7, Pick 239: Siran Neal, Safety, Jacksonville State
2017: 39 tackles, one for a loss, one interception, 11 passes defended, one forced fumble (6-1, 205 pounds)
While the Packers may have plenty of bodies at corner, they’ve got space at safety. Neal is a project that could help on special teams.
Round 7, Pick 240: Toby Weathersby, OT, LSU
6-6, 308 pounds
Weathersby was a four-star prospect coming out of high school that didn’t quite live up to billing in the bayou.
