2018 HSBC Women’s World Championship Tournament Preview

Shanshan Feng

The best ladies in the world will make their way to Singapore, Malaysia for this week’s HSBC Women’s World Championship. The field for this week’s event will include 19 of the top 20 ranked golfers in the world. This week’s field has combined for 177 PGA Tour wins including 29 majors, with all five major winners from a year ago set to compete. Inbee Park will be in the spotlight as she makes her 2018 LPGA Tour debut after winning this tournament a year ago. Park will undoubtedly be among the top contenders this week but an absolutely loaded field means that she will not be among the top sports betting favorites to win this year’s HSBC Women’s World Championship.

Event Details

Event: HSBC Women’s World Championship

Category: LPGA

Date: March 1st-4th, 2018

Location: Sentosa Golf Club, Singapore, Malaysia

Park hasn’t teed up since the Ricoh Women’s British Open in August so the long layoff might not work in her favor this week. Park has dealt with a number of injuries but she should be refreshed in time for this week’s tournament. Park hasn’t won a major tournament since 2015 but the 30-year-old has talked openly about her desire to return to the top and she should feel confident this year at an event where she has had some success before.

Past Five Winners

2017: Inbee Park -19

2016: Ha-na Jang -19

2015: Inbee Park -15

2014: Paula Creamer -10

2013: Stacy Lewis -15

What To Know About The Course

There should be plenty of low scores at the Singapore course this week as this year’s field appears primed to dominate. Experience should count for something but ultimately it will be about efficiency. Greens In Regulation and Putting numbers are the two key statistics to keep an eye on this week. Those that consistently hit the greens and put at a high level consistently enough should be among the top contenders to win this week.

The Field

While Park is a top contender to repeat at this tournament, it’s Lexi Thompson that is listed as the sports betting favorite to win this event. Thompson is listed at +700 odds to win outright, followed by Shanshan Feng at +905 odds and Sung Hyun Park at +10500 odds. Ariya Jutanugarn is another familiar face that is expected to contend at +1550 odds to win this tournament outright. Jin Young Ko, Minjee Lee and Moriya Jutanugarn round out the list of sports betting favorites for this week’s HSBC Women’s World Championship.

A Good Matchup To Bet: Inbee Park over Moriya Jutanugarn

Park’s betting odds make her that much more attractive to put some money on and a head-to-head betting matchup represents the perfect opportunity. While Jutanugarn could very well deliver another strong performance this week, Park has the talent to win outright here and should be able to produce a better score than her counterpart. While the long lay off could lead to some hesitation to support her, Park should be fresh and ready to deliver a strong performance as the defending champion at this event.

Top-Five Pick: Lexi Thompson

In seven rounds on the LPGA Tour so far this season, Thompson hasn’t been over par yet. The world No. 2 fired an eight-under 64 on Sunday in the Honda LPGA Thailand so she should feel confident heading in to this week. After finishing tied for 25th here a year ago, Thompson should have no problem building on that performance this week. A top-five finish should be expected from Thompson as she contends for the outright victory this week.
