There are plenty of obstacles that can get in the way of teams looking to win a national championship. The problem is that there aren’t many options out there to improve a team’s chances to win once the season actually begins. Unlike in major professional sports leagues, trades simply don’t exist in college football. Coaches do the best they can to build the best possible lineup before the year begins, but after that they are one their own. So what would happen if trades were allowed at the college football level? Here is a look at five college football trades that we would love to see.
Michigan Trades OT Mason Cole & 5 4-Star Signees For UCLA QB Josh Rosen
Jim Harbaugh has completely shaken up the Michigan football program in a short period of time, but he is still looking for an elite quarterback to help put the Wolverines over the top. Josh Rosen would do actually that as the star passer that would completely transform the Michigan offense and take them to that next level. The price for Rosen wouldn’t be cheap though with tackle Mason Cole and a number of young 4-star signees headed the other way to UCLA. Harbaugh might have to part ways with some considerable young talent, but he would get the star quarterback he covets and that would really put Michigan over the top as a legitimate contender bot in the Big Ten and on the national stage.
Florida Trades 3 4-Star Signees For Notre Dame QB Malik Zaire
The quarterback position is the most important in college football, but the allure of several young talents could be enough to convince teams to move their starters in the same way that star athletes are traded for packages of prospects with the potential to become stars down the road in pro sports. Florida would have to include 4-star wide receiver Joshua Hammond along with two other 4-star players, but they would get the top passer Jim McElwain is looking for and that could be enough to put them over the top in the SEC East. The Fighting Irish would be confident that DeShone Kizer can handle the starting job over Zaire and that would make them that much more willing to make this trade.
LSU Trades 3 4-Star Signees For Miami QB Brad Kaaya
Miami’s new head coach Mark Richt has brought a level of optimism with him to the Hurricanes, but he might not have enough talent to contend in the ACC even with Kaaya as his quarterback. Kaaya is an elite college passer and a first-round NFL talent, but Miami doesn’t have the star power to take down Florida State and Clemson this season and an argument can be made that he would be better off moving him now for a package of young talent that can help turn things around at Miami in the long term. LSU enters this season with some considerable talent including star running back Leonard Fournette, but their biggest question mark is at the quarterback position and the addition of a star passer could help put them over the top in the SEC West.
Clemson Trades 2 4-Star Signees For Washington S Budda Baker
Clemson is expected to contend for championships both in the ACC and on the national stage, but they could certainly use some help at the safety position after they lost Jayron Kearse and T.J. Green to the NFL. Washington safety Budda Baker was a first-team All-Pac 12 honoree in 2015 and would be the perfect fit for the Tigers’ defense. Clemson could trade a couple of young receivers that fit for Washington and solidify their defensive secondary in the process.
Stanford Trades 2 4-Star Signees For Indiana OG Dan Feeney
Stanford will want to pound the rock over and over again this season with running back Christian McCaffrey leading the way for them on offense and they could solidify their run game with the addition of another quality starter at right guard in Feeney. The Cardinal lost starting quarterback Kevin Hogan so there will be even more of an emphasis on running the football especially early on next season. Feeney was a third-team AP All-American for Indiana last season and he could be even better in a stronger system and with more talent around him at Stanford.
