2013: Justin Rose +1
Dustin Johnson +800
D.J. is definitely the obvious sports betting favorite to win the U.S. Open this week. The FedEx St. Jude Classic winner is an outstanding links player, a U.S. Open specialist and when he is hot he is tough to beat. Johnson has incredible length off the tee and Shinnecock is the perfect venue for him to succeed at. The price point isn’t particularly special. However, there is a reason D.J. is listed at +800 odds to win outright.
Rory McIlroy +1200
McIlroy doesn’t have an extraordinary U.S. Open record but that doesn’t mean he won’t contend for the win this week. McIlroy already has a victory at the Arnold Palmer Invitational under his belt this year and while he hasn’t been at his best since that tournament he undoubtedly has the talent to contend. An Open Championship winner that has performed well on links courses, McIlroy could be somewhat flying under the radar heading in to the U.S. Open.
Justin Rose +1400
Speaking of flying under the radar, Rose is an excellent value pick at +1400 odds to win outright. The 2013 U.S. Open winner is an outstanding links player and he has been putting at a very high level of late. Rose was sixth in his most recent start at the Memorial tournament and he is only a couple of starts removed from winning the Fort Worth Invitational. There is a very good chance that Rose is in contention for the outright win in New York this weekend.
Justin Thomas +1400
Thomas has struggled since losing to Phil Mickelson beat him in a playoff in Mexico in March but he did finish 11th at the Players Championship and recorded another top-10 finish in the Memorial tournament. If he is going to contend this week, he is going to need to avoid the type of slow starts that have plagued him in recent weeks. If Thomas performs at a high level on Thursday and Friday, Thomas should contend for the outright victory at the U.S. Open.
Jason Day +1600
Day has already won twice this year, which bodes well for him heading in to the U.S. Open where he has had success before. Day is the No. 1 scrambler on the PGA Tour over the last three months and if he can get it together with his irons he should be in the mix. Day has a winning pedigree and at +1600 odds he should get a long look this week.
Branden Grace +3300
Moving past the betting favorites, Grace is an intriguing option as he looks to contend for his first major title this week. Grace has spent the past couple of years gaining some valuable experience while improving his overall game, which should translate well at this course. The South African has two top-five finishes in his last three starts so he should feel confident heading in to this tournament. At +3300 odds, Grace should be a popular pick to win the U.S. Open this week.
Tony Finau +8000
If you are looking for a sleeper pick to contend this week then Finau could offer sneaky good value. Finau is coming off the best major performance of his career with a 10th place finish at The Masters despite dislocating his ankle celebrating a hole-in-one on the par-3 contest. A runner-up at Riviera earlier this year, Finau should fare well as one of the best ball strikers in the field. His Driving ability should be a major factor in his ability to contend this week. At +8000, Finau is an excellent sleeper option to win the U.S. Open.
Kyle Stanley +10000
Speaking of sleeper value picks for this week, Stanley is an intriguing pick. Stanley’s tee-to-green game has been absolutely phenomenal and if he can putt at a high level he could surprise as a potential contender. Stanley has putted better on the type of fast greens he will play on at Shinnecock this week. If he can put it together both mentally and on the greens, Stanley could find himself in contention on Sunday as a +10000 bet to win the U.S. Open.
