San Diego Padres at Arizona Diamondbacks Betting Preview 07/07/18

The San Diego Padres will face their division rival Arizona Diamondbacks at Chase Field. Fox Sports Arizona is in line to broadcast the action and the game gets going at 10:10 p.m. ET.

San Diego Padres at Arizona Diamondbacks Odds

San Diego (+160) is the underdog against Arizona (-170) and Vegas has set the Over/Under for this night game at 7.5 runs (-105 for the under and -115 for the over). Bettors can also wager on the game’s spread with the runline odds sitting at -135 for the Padres +1.5 runs and +115 for the Diamondbacks -1.5.

The Padres are only 38-52 SU and have gone 42-47 against the spread (ATS). They’ve lost 4.5 units for moneyline bettors and 20.4 units ATS. San Diego’s covered the spread only once over its last seven games and the under has hit in three of those seven. The Diamondbacks, on the other hand, are 49-40 SU and 45-43 ATS. The right-handed Tyson Ross is getting the nod for the visiting Padres. Ross is 5-6 with a 3.78 ERA and 90 strikeouts. He’s 0-0 with 10 strikeouts and a 1.17 ERA against Arizona this year.

The Diamondbacks will put the ball in the left hand of Robbie Ray (3-1, 4.89 ERA), who’s got 58 punchouts and 20 walks as well as a 1.45 WHIP. Ray hasn’t faced the Padres yet this year, but he made four starts against them in 2017, compiling a spotless 3-0 record with a 2.92 ERA and 35 strikeouts.

As a unit, Arizona’s pitchers have allowed 3.8 runs per game overall in 2018. Its starters have an ERA of 4.05, a WHIP of 1.26 and a strikeouts-per-nine of 9.1. The bullpen has a solid ERA of just 2.54, a WHIP of 1.15 and a K/9 of 7.8. In 35 divisional games, Diamondbacks starters have an ERA of 3.94 and the bullpen’s ERA is 3.01.

The Arizona offense is putting up 4.3 runs per outing, including 4.7 per game against divisional foes and 3.4 per game over its last five. The team has a slash-line of .247/.330/.333 over its last five contests and is 2-3 SU during that span.

First baseman Paul Goldschmidt and outfielder David Peralta have led the way for the Diamondbacks’ batters this year. Goldschmidt is hitting .273/.381/.528 with 19 home runs, 48 RBIs and 58 runs scored, and Peralta’s line is .282/.347/.500 with 15 homers, 46 RBIs and 38 runs scored.

In the other dugout, San Diego’s pitching staff allowed 4.5 runs per game and its starters own a 4.59 ERA, 1.43 WHIP and 7.66 K/9. The bullpen has logged an ERA of 3.53, along with a WHIP of 1.43.

The Padres offense has slashed .234/.299/.366 on its way to 3.7 runs scored per game this year, including 3.8 runs per game against divisional foes and 3.2 per game over the team’s last five outings (1-4 SU).

San Diego’s hitters have been paced by first baseman Eric Hosmer and left fielder Jose Pirela. Hosmer is slashing .261/.335/.412 with nine home runs, 37 RBIs and 38 runs scored. Pirela is hitting .260/.310/.348 with two homers, 25 RBIs and 43 runs scored.

The Padres have lost 7.5 units and are 9-18 ATS when facing a left-handed starting pitcher this year. The over has cashed in 14 of those games, compared to 13 that’ve hit the under in such games. On the other hand, the Diamondbacks have lost 0.6 units and are 30-28 ATS when facing a righty starter. The over’s hit in 28 of those games, compared to 28 that went under the total.
