Going outside the organization, but back into its history, the Denver Broncos have hired one-time backup quarterback Gary Kubiak as its new head coach.

According to Mike Klis of the Denver Post, the contract is expected to be for four years and Kubiak will be officially introduced on Tuesday.
Kubiak was the offensive coordinator for the Broncos from 1995-2005 under former head coach Mike Shanahan, picking up two Super Bowl rings for his trouble. Kubiak spent eight seasons as the head coach of the Houston Texans and one season as the Baltimore Ravens offensive coordinator.
Kubiak and general manager John Elway’s relationship goes all the way back to 1983. Kubiak was Elway’s backup until retiring in 1991 to begin his coaching career. Kubiak spent two year as running backs coach for Texas A&M, before returning to the NFL coaching quarterbacks for the 1994 San Francisco 49ers. Kubiak got his first Super Bowl ring with San Francisco. In all, Kubiak has suited up for or coached in six Super Bowls.

The hiring of Kubiak probably spells the end of offensive coordinator Adam Gase’s tenure with the team. Gase was a hot head-coaching prospect entering the postseason, but with only one open position left, the Atlanta Falcons, and guys like Doug Marrone, Mike Shanahan and Seahawks defensive coordinator Dan Quinn still out there, Gase’s window is probably closed.
