UFC Running Out of Options For Fast Approaching UFC 184 Main Event

Vitor Belfort is still looking for an opponent at UFC 184 after title belt holder Chris Weidman had to drop out from injury.

The February 28the UFC 184 event was to feature the Chris Weidman vs Vitor Belfort middleweight title clash until Weidman was forced to pull out with an injury.  UFC President Dana White is on record as stating that he is looking for an opponent for Belfort, whom he hopes to keep on the PPV.

Is it possible that Chael Sonnen comes out of retirement for UFC 184?  White is reported to have offered Belfort a fight with fellow Brazilian Lyoto Machida with an interim title on the line, however Belfort is said to have preferred to just wait for Weidman than face Machida.  White has said he has one more fight he plans to offer Belfort, which shows how much the UFC wants to keep Belfort on the card.

You can be sure that Belfort will also run as far away as possible from a fight with Ronaldo “Jacare” Souza, who isn’t scheduled to be facing anyone right now.  Gegard Mousasi would be a very interesting fight, as he is coming off a good win against Dan Henderson where he really didn’t spend a lot of energy.  If White was willing to break up the Machida-Rockhold fight to make an interim shot happen, would White offer Belfort Rockhold as well?  It would be a rematch and again it is highly likely Belfort would turn that down as well.  If White leaves it up to Belfort, you can be almost sure we will not have a fight.

So we are left with Ronda Rousey versus Cat Zingano as the main event.  With Holly Holm on the main card making her MMA debut, the focus for UFC 184 will fall flatly on the women’s bantamweight division.  The hype leading up to this Rousey title defense has been relatively tame and she has not fought in six months, so her ability to headline what was expected to be a strong PPV is in question.  This is why White needs a big name like Chael Sonnen badly right about now.
