California Chrome Trying to Make History

There is no question that California Chrome is the best horse in Saturday’s Belmont Stakes but the best horse usually doesn’t win the Belmont.  It is a grueling mile and a half that horses simply are not prepared to go.  There have been a lot of longshots in recent history who have won the Belmont and that could be the case again.  California Chrome has won all five of his races this year and has won six straight overall.

Longshot Race

The Belmont has been a race where big prices have hit the board in recent years.  Since 2000, eight of the fourteen winners of the Belmont Stakes have paid 10-1 or more. And some of those have been bombs including Sarava who paid $142.50, Da’Tara who paid $79, Birdstone who paid $74 and Ruler On Ice who paid $51.50.  This year there are a lot of longshots including Ride On Curlin who was close in the Preakness. “I definitely think the horse is ready,” said trainer Billy Gowan. “I wouldn’t be running just to say I ran in the Belmont. I think I’ve got a legitimate chance of winning it, or I wouldn’t be here. You know, I’ve gotten closer to California Chrome than anybody else has this year, so hopefully with a little added distance we can maybe take him. But he’s a tough horse. I’ve got all the respect in the world for him.”

Belmont Stakes Predictions

I think California Chrome has a really good chance to win on Saturday and I would love to see a Triple Crown winner.  I will take him at 3-5 and for my two longshots I will go with Ride On Curlin at 12-1 and Medal Count at 20-1.
