The Best Of The Best From This Past Weekend’s MLS Fantasy Action

The double surely helped Watson's value this week.

DC United sent Orlando City SC to another devastating loss with a dramatic stoppage time goal that robbed the home side of at least a single point and while it might not have had the most dramatic effect on the overall fantasy picture, it was another example that anything can happen in any game.

New England, Chicago and Sporting Kansas City were among the other notable winners from this past weekend and that was reflected in the fantasy production of their top players. With that in mind, here is a quick look at the most important fantasy news from the MLS this past weekend.

Dom Dwyer – F, Sporting Kansas City

Dwyer only had one goal in SKC’s 3-2 win over Philadelphia but he had seven shots on goal and won 17 fouls for the best fantasy performance of the week among MLS strikers. Dwyer had consistently put up single digit fantasy totals before finally breaking out this past weekend, so his owners have to be happy with the performance.

Maximiliano Urruti – F, Portland Timbers

The Timbers finally broke through for their first win of the season with a 3-1 victory over Dallas and Urruti played a starring role up front with the goal that stood as the eventual game winner. Urruti added two more shots on goal and won a number of fouls to ranks as the second-highest scoring fantasy forward of the week. Portland has been playing well at the offensive end as they’ve tallied six goals so far. That’s the second-most in the Western Conference as of right now.

Sebastian Giovinco – F, Toronto FC

The Italian striker scored his first MLS goal on Saturday in a 3-2 loss to the Chicago Fire. Giovinco was undoubtedly Toronto’s best player and it seemed as though he was destined to lead them to a win before they were reduced to 10 men via a red card. They then proceeded to allow two unanswered goals en route to a loss. That’s now dropped Toronto to three losses in four games this season.

Giovinco has shown flashes of his elite skill set already and his production numbers should continue to improve as he gets used to playing with a new team and in a new league.

Harry Shipp – M, Chicago Fire

Chicago’s rally was spearheaded in their midfield with a pair of excellent performances as Shipp and Jeff Larentowicz led all midfielders in MLS fantasy production. Larentowicz was the goal scorer but Shipp had arguably the most impressive performance with a pair of assists to slightly edge out his teammate as the top fantasy midfielder from this past weekend.

Luis Silva – M, DC United

Silva played a starring role in DC United’s late win over Orlando City SC as he scored a beautiful free kick goal in stoppage time to help them steal three points in dramatic fashion. Silva didn’t have a point through his first three weeks and there is a good chance he wasn’t on many rosters, but that doesn’t take away the fact that he ranked third among all MLS midfielders in fantasy production for this past weekend.

Kendall Waston – D, Vancouver Whitecaps

Those that bought in to the idea of playing the Vancouver double by investing in Whitecaps defenders were rewarded by a strong performance by Waston, who ranked second among fantasy D with his performance this past weekend. Vancouver is back in action on Wednesday against Portland and any points that Waston can add on top of what he has already done can only be considered gravy now.

Bobby Shuttleworth – G, New England Revolution

The Revolution took another step in the right direction with their second consecutive win and Shuttleworth stood out as the best keeper to have this week in MLS fantasy competitions as he made five saves for the clean sheet. New England has conceded just a single goal over its last three games combined and Shuttleworth has looked excellent.
