Nearly one month after surprising most industry experts and committing to Michigan State, Caleb Swanigan again shocked the recruiting world when ESPN’s Jeff Goodman reported that the five-star center had decommitted from the Spartans.
The news broke right after 4 p.m. EST on Thursday afternoon, and turned social media into a frenzy with nearly everyone having their own hot-take on the situation.
If Tom Izzo was already tired of the challenges of big-time recruiting, I’m guessing the Swanigan saga is only adding to that.

I’d think the bigger story re: Swanigan was not at least signing a grant-in-aid agreement. Elite players shouldn’t sign NLI anyway. — Raphielle Johnson (@raphiellej) May 7, 2015
Now, Goodman and others have reported that Purdue is a serious player for Swanigan at this point, but many signs also point towards California.
After all, the Bears looked like the probable landing spot for the threesome of Swanigan, Ivan Rabb, and Jaylen Brown the day that Swanigan picked MSU. Since that day, both Rabb and Brown have signed with the Bears and head coach Cuonzo Martin.
Another interesting storyline at play here is that of another big-time prospect decommitting from his initial choice due to continued recruiting by other schools. In college football recruiting, such a thing is business as usual. However, the college basketball landscape is much different, with schools generally moving on once a prospect has committed.
We will be sure to keep you updated with the latest developments involving Swanigan and what school he ultimately chooses.
