One of the top overall transfers on the market made his decision official over the weekend, as former Seton Hall guard Sterling Gibbs announced that he will finish his career at UConn, under head coach Kevin Ollie.
Gibbs averaged 16.3 points and 3.8 assists per game last season with the Pirates, helping them get off to a 13-3 start. That is where things went sour for Gibbs and Seton Hall, as they went on to drop 12 of their last 15 games, and Gibbs was suspended for two games for throwing a punch against Villanova.
With the addition of the high scoring guard, UConn became one of the big winners in the college transfer market, pairing him alongside Shonn Miller, who averaged 16.8 points and 8.5 rebounds at Cornell last season. The Huskies are also adding two four-star recruits, Jalen Adams and Steve Enoch, to a roster that returns four starters from a team that made a late push for an NCAA Tournament bid, falling to SMU in the AAC Conference Tournament final.
UConn has never had a shortage of high scoring guards on their roster, though last season’s run with Ryan Boatright running the show didn’t go as many expected. With Gibbs, Ollie will once again have a PG who can hit from beyond the arc with consistency, but also get to the rim, and free throw line, when needed.
This will be the third different school that Gibbs has played for in his college career, as he started at Texas before returning to his native New Jersey and playing for Seton Hall.
