Colts Troll Themselves with “2014 AFC Finalist” Banner

No. This isn't an article from The Onion.

I’m not sure what the ultimate goal here was, but here’s what happened. The Indianapolis Colts, to celebrate their 45-7 curb-stomp loss to the New England Patriots in last year’s AFC Championship Game, hung a “2014 AFC Finalist” banner in the rafters of Lucas Oil Stadium Wednesday.

I would say, “this is not  a joke,” but it kind of is. If you think this banner is an attempt to troll the Patriots who got busted for DeflateGate during the game with the Colts, think again. The Colts have done this twice before back in 1995 and in 2003. No. This is something the Colts do.

The banner sits alongside 2013’s AFC South Champions banner, which actually makes sense. But celebrating a loss, especially a lopsided defeat, doesn’t seem like the best way to pump up your franchise or players.

Still, it’s weird. In 2009 when they lost to the New Orleans Saints in the Super Bowl, they didn’t hang a “Super Bowl Participant” banner. They hung a “2009 AFC Champions” banner.

But, you know, congratulations, Colts. I guess. You’ve literally just hung up a giant participation ribbon like the fat kid gets at field day.
