This Saturday night a high-level welterweight clash between Timothy “Desert Storm” Bradley (31-1-1) and undefeated Jessie Vargas (26-0) will air on HBO. Both men are former world champions, though Vargas’ title came at super lightweight and he is moving up in weight for this fight.
Bradley is coming off a winless 2014 as he went 0-1-1 in two fights. The loss, in his rematch to Manny Pacquiao can be forgiven, but a draw against Argentine Diego Gabriel Chaves in his last outing opens up a lot of questions. Chaves is a solid fighter, but Bradley should have outlcassed him and some took it as the first sign of slipapge in Bradley as he is now 31 years old.
One person who may be thinking that is the 26-year-old Vargas, who will have slight height and reach advantages despite coming up from the smaller weight class. Both men are technical boxers not known for their knockout power, so this one basically will come down to who is sharper on Saturday night.
Top Rank is promoting a Friday night card in Texas that will air on TruTV in the USA and is headlined by undefeated Gilberto Ramirez (31-0) as he defends his WBO International Super Middleweight belt against Derek Edwards (27-4-1). Also on that broadcast, and sure to pop up at the books later this week, is the WBO World title eliminator bout between Diego Magdaleno (27-1) and Jose Gonzalez (24-1).
