Week 2 of the college football season didn’t look there would be a lot of banner matchups but it did provide some interesting results.
That includes a couple of entertaining storylines that proved you can never sleep on any one game at the NCAA level. Here is a look at the wildest headlines from Week 2 beginning with the “Scare in Jordan-Hare”.
Auburn Avoids The Upset
The fact that No. 6 Auburn actually trailed Jacksonville State at home as a 41-point favorite is telling. They trailed by a touchdown with under a minute to go and had all sorts of Vegas experts searching through the archives to determine if the loss would have been the biggest upset in college football history.
Junior quarterback Jeremy Johnson didn’t look good for the second straight game and the Tigers really struggled to get going on the offensive side of the football. Johnson has thrown five interceptions through two games and his field vision looks like a major weakness.
However, Auburn managed to get the game to overtime with a game-tying touchdown with 40 seconds remaining and eventually survived the potential upset from the FCS side. The Tigers tumbled 12 spots in the AP Top 25 after that scare but they were very fortunate to avoid the upset. Now all eyes will be on them this week as they head to Baton Rouge to play LSU on Saturday in the All-Tigers matchup. They better figure out what’s wrong with the offense quickly.
Sooners Comeback To Stun Vols At Rocky Top
The Oklahoma Sooners looked like they were dead in the water at Rocky Top as they started poorly – for a second straight week – and dug themselves a 17-0 hole to the much-improved Volunteers. However, they stuck with it and made one of the most impressive comebacks of the young college football season.
The biggest crowd in Neyland Stadium history (102,455) were stunned when Sooners quarterback Baker Mayfield engineered two fourth quarter touchdown drives to tie the game in the dying seconds. After starting 8-of-25, he finished the game going 11-of-14 for 103 yards and three touchdown passes.
The Vols, who were itching to prove that they deserve a big boy seat at the table in the SEC, have now lost 28 of their last 29 games against ranked opponents. They’re a young team will have to rebound quickly as we start to move into conference play.

Female Kent State Kicker Makes College Football History
In one of the wildest storylines of the week, Kent State kicker April Goss was carried off the field after making history. While making her very first appearance for the team during her four-year career, she became just the second woman in major college football history to score a point. She knocked in an extra point in the second quarter.

After connecting on the conversion, she received a standing ovation from the crowd and her teammates them picked her up and carried her off the field. In case you’re wondering who was the first ever woman to notch a point, that would be Katie Hnida, who scored for New Mexico back in 2003.
Notre Dame Wins Game, Loses Quarterback
The wildest storyline from Week 1 was BYU’s incredible last-season Hail Mary to complete the comeback win at Nebraska but a season-ending injury to starting quarterback Taysom Hill stole at least some of its thunder.
In Week 2, Notre Dame managed to survive a tough test at Virginia to improve to 2-0 but it wasn’t all about survive and advance because the Fighting Irish lost their starting quarterback to a season-ending injury. Malik Zaire was brilliant in Notre Dame’s Week 1 win over Texas and while he struggled early on against the Cavaliers it’s hard to overstate how big of a loss he will be for this team.
The Fighting Irish managed to stay undefeated in a wild Week 2 win but the loss of a potential Heisman trophy candidate at quarterback could have major repercussions moving forward.
