Washington Huskies vs. UCLA Bruins Betting Preview

Washington is significantly favored here and is currently giving up 21 points to UCLA. Vegas has determined the over/under (O/U) to be 50.5 points. If one program can create a bunch of points early, it will likely result in a decent in-game betting opportunity.

Sharp bettors have been siding with the over, as the game’s O/U was initially set at 49.5.

The Huskies are 2-3 against the spread (ATS) and have recorded 2.0 units so far. They’ve been a good under bet and have recorded an O/U mark of 0-5. The Bruins have been a disappointment to moneyline bettors this season, losing 9.3 units. The team is 1-3 ATS and has an O/U record of 1-3.

The Huskies are 4-1 straight up (SU), including 2-0 SU against Pac-12 opponents. The Bruins are 0-4 SU overall and are also 0-1 SU in conference play.

The Huskies are coming off a resounding 35-7 win over BYU last week where Jake Browning completed 23 passes on 25 attempts for 277 yards and one touchdown. Myles Gaskin (81 rushing yards on 14 attempts, one TD) and Salvon Ahmed (86 yards on 10 carries, two TDs) provided the ground attack while Aaron Fuller (eight receptions, 107 yards) and Drew Sample (five catches, 37 yards, one TD) handled the receiving duties in the win.

One week ago, Colorado knocked off this UCLA team by a score of 38-16. Dorian Thompson-Robinson completed 17-of-35 passes for 138 yards and one touchdown. Joshua Kelley (124 yards on 12 rush attempts) spearheaded the running attack as Demetric Felton (three receptions, 49 yards) and Theo Howard (three catches, 19 yards) led the pass-catching attack in the loss.

Breaking down the offensive play-calling, each squad has a similar run-pass ratio on the season. Washington’s run the ball on 55.3 percent of its offensive possessions while UCLA has an overall rush percentage of 53.4. Having said that, the Huskies have run for 165 yards per game (including 172 per game against Pac-12 opponents) and have nine scores on the ground this year. The Bruins haven’t been quite as successful, as they’re averaging 136 rush yards per game and have five total rushing TDs.

If 2018 results are any indication, then it’s looking like the Huskies could own the edge in terms of efficiency in the ground game, as their running backs has logged 4.5 yards per carry while their defense is allowing 3.6 yards per rush attempt to opponents. The Bruins have recorded 3.9 yards per carry and allowed 3.9 YPC to opponents.

The Huskies offensive scheme has logged 273 yards per contest in the air overall (179 per game versus conference opposition) and has nine passing scores so far. The Bruins have put up 176 pass yards per contest and have three total pass TDs.

On the defensive side of the ball, Washington should have the upper hand in both facets. The team has allowed 126 rush yards and 155 pass yards per game. The UCLA defense has given up 238.5 yards per game to opposing passers and 183.0 yards per game to opposing runners. The Huskies are allowing an adjusted net yards per pass attempt (ANY/A) of only 4.19 to opposing QBs, while the Bruins have given up a 7.60 ANY/A.

Passing-wise, Browning has put up 1,041 yards this season. He’s connected on 78-of-118 attempts with five passing scores and four interceptions. Browning has a 7.26 adjusted net yards per pass attempt overall, although that number is 11.10 over the last two outings.

Dorian Thompson-Robinson has managed to complete 48-of-86 passes for 509 yards, two TDs and zero INTs for UCLA. His ANY/A stands at a less-than-spectacular 4.72 for the season and 3.37 over his past two games.

When these two teams faced one another last year, Washington won by three touchdowns 44-23.
