LISTEN: Ranking Boxing’s Top 10 Pound-For-Pound Fighters

Check out the latest Talk ‘n’ Shoot Podcast where we review Boxing’s top pound for pound fighters now that Floyd Mayweather Jr has retired.  On this version of the Talk ‘n’ Shoot Podcast we are joined by co-hosts Mike Davis and former WBC World Light Heavyweight Champion Montell Griffin.

The controversy starts with Flyweight champion Roman “Chocolatito” Gonzalez, who has been named the top pound for pound fighter in the world today by the respected RING Magazine.  The fact is that the lowest weight classes in boxing are often not given credit. Apart from being a phenomenal boxer, Gonzalez is one of the first to break that stigma.

Gonzalez is the co-main event on HBO and at New York’s Madison Square Garden on Oct. 17 when he faces Brian “Hawaiian Punch” Viloria.  The fight is in support of the huge David Lemieux versus Gennady Golovkin bout and is the biggest stage of Chocolatito’s career.

But that was not the only contentious point, as Griffin expressed a strong opinion that middleweight kingpin Gennady Golovkin should be left off the the top 10 list completely because of a lack of competition. Furthermore, Griffin describes flaws he sees in Golovkin’s game that were exposed in the Willie Monroe Jr fight. Golovkin rates at No. 4 on the list produced by the RING.

Fighters in the discussion for the fabled No. 1 spot included Wladimir Klitschko, Andre Ward and Sergey Kovalev.  Other fighters that entered the discussion were Guillermo Rigondeaux, Terence Crawford and Manny Pacquiao.

The Pac-man became a source for discussion as well, since his recent loss to Floyd Mayweather Jr left a general bad taste in everyone’s mouth, and most critics accuse him of looking bad in the fight.  The podcast, led by Griffin come to the conclusion that the Pac-Man still belongs on the list.  The fact of the matter is, as Griffin pointed out, “It isn’t like Manny’s loss to Mayweather was him losing to a guy he wasn’t supposed to lose to”.

The podcast kicks off with a review of the big fight calendar coming up.  Griffin reveals a potential comeback to the sport and that he has been sparring with light heavyweight contender Andrzej Fonfara, who headlines the “Premier Boxing Champions” card scheduled for the UIC in Chicago on October 16th facing former world champion Nathan Cleverly of England.

Also discussed is the David Lemieux versus Gennady Golovkin match, as well as the huge November middleweight clash between Miguel Cotto and Saul “Canelo” Alvarez.

The trio also speculates whenther the already once postponed Wladimir Klitschko and Tyson Fury Heavyweight bout is even going to happen.  The bout is set for Nov. 28 after an original date at the end of October was shelved due to a Klitschko ankle injury. Klitschko is 39 years old now, and his November of 2014 fight against Kubrat Pulev was postponed due to injuries as well.  Is the big Ukranian breaking down?  All this and more on this latest version of the Talk ‘n’ Shoot Podcast.
