Charlotte 49ers at Florida Atlantic Owls Betting Preview

The 49ers approach this Saturday CUSA game as a big underdog and are currently being given 18 points. In order to take the home favorite, moneyline gamblers would currently have to spend $1,500 to win $100 back on the Owls (-1500). The 49ers are getting +810 moneyline odds. Should one team can create a bunch of points in the early stages it’ll create a decent betting opportunity in-game. Oddsmakers have set the over/under (O/U) at 54.5 points.

This game’s O/U has not moved after it was set initially at 54.5. Having said that, the opening line was -17 so square bettors are hammering the Owls.

The 49ers are 6-5 against the spread (ATS) and have gained 0.8 units so far in 2018. The team has posted an O/U record of 6-4. The Owls are down 3.7 units for moneyline bettors this season. They’re 4-7 ATS and also own an O/U record of 6-4.

The 49ers have gone 4-7 straight up (SU), including 3-4 SU against conference opponents. The Owls are 5-6 SU overall and 3-4 SU in conference play.

The Niners fell to FIU 42-35 in a game where Hasaan Klugh completed 16-of-22 passes for 253 yards, along with one score and a pick. Benny LeMay (159 rushing yards on 30 attempts, four TDs) and the signal-caller Klugh (48 yards on 13 carries) led the ground attack. Victor Tucker (four receptions, 115 yards) and Workpeh Kofa (four catches, 37 yards) handled the receiving duties in the defeat.

Back on November 15, North Texas took care of this Florida Atlantic team by a score of 41-38. The Owls defensive unit allowed the Mean Green to pass for 303 yards and two touchdowns while rushing for 208 yards and three scores. DeAndre Torrey was outstandingfor the Mean Green, recording 184 rushing yards and a score on 17 attempts. For Florida Atlantic, Chris Robison completed 21-of-35 passes for 294 yards, two touchdowns and two interceptions. Devin Singletary (91 rushing yards on 23 attempts, two TDs) and Kerrith Whyte, Jr. (76 yards on 16 carries, one TD) spearheaded the running game as Harrison Bryant (six receptions, 138 yards, one TD) and Jovon Durante (six catches, 90 yards, one TD) led the receiving corps in the loss.

In terms of offensive play-calling, each of these squads has a similar run-pass ratio on the season. Charlotte’s run the ball on 62.4 percent of its offensive possessions while Florida Atlantic has an overall rush percentage of 60.6. The 49ers have run for 148 yards/game (including 163 per game against Conference USA opponents) and have 16 touchdowns on the ground this year. The Owls are logging 247 rushing yards per game (262 in conference) and have 34 total rush TDs.

It appears that the Owls should have an edge when it comes to quarterback protection. Their offensive line has yielded only 13 sacks while the D-line has logged 20 sacks. The 49ers O-line has allowed 35 sacks and their defense has forced only 18 sacks.

The Niners offensive scheme has logged 187 yards/contest in the air overall (178 per game against conference opposition) and has nine passing TDs so far. The Owls have recorded 231 pass yards per contest (223.7 against CUSA foes) and have 12 total pass scores.

Defensively, Charlotte seems to have the upper hand in both phases. The team has let opponents run for an average of 98 yards and throw for 225 yards per game. The Florida Atlantic D has given up 253.4 yards per game to opposing passers and 175.5 yards per game on the ground. Both teams allow similar adjusted net yards per pass attempt (ANY/A) to opponents, as the Niners have given up an ANY/A of 7.14 to opposing QBs, while the Owls are allowing an ANY/A of 6.89.

Offensively, Klugh has amassed 253 passing yards this season. He’s completed 64 percent of his 25 attempts with one scores through the air and one interception. He has a 7.57 adjusted net yards per pass attempt, including 6.83 over the last two outings.

The 49ers will likely try to control tempo by pounding the defense with their running backs. Along with Victor Tucker (681 yards, two TDs), Benny LeMay (985 rush yards, 10 rush TDs, 275 receiving yards) and Aaron McAllister (359 rush yards, two rush TDs) have really been focal points in the Charlotte offensive scheme.

Chris Robison has completed 162-of-261 passes for 2,029 yards, 10 TDs and 12 INTs for Florida Atlantic. His ANY/A stands at 6.18 for the year and 7.93 across his past two outings.

The Owls also prefer to rely on their backfield. Jovon Durante (783 receiving yards, five TDs) has chipped in lately, but Kerrith Whyte, Jr. (678 rush yards, six rush TDs, one receiving TD) and Devin Singletary (1,112 rush yards, 20 rush TDs) have seen a lot of action recently.
