Here’s the preview from PBC’s website.
The first time Alejandro Gonzalez Jr. returned to the ring after a loss, he did so with a fury, scoring a swift second-round knockout.
The Mexican native will try to duplicate that effort November 10 when he takes on 118-pound rival Karim Guerfi (22-3, 6 KOs) in a Premier Boxing Champions main event from Austin City Music Hall in Austin, Texas (Fox Sports 1, 9 p.m. ET/6 p.m. PT).
Gonzalez (25-2-2, 15 KOs) appeared well on his way to his fourth consecutive victory—and first world title—on July 18 in El Paso, Texas, when he dropped 122-pound champion Carl Frampton twice in the first round. But Gonzalez was unable to finish off the unbeaten Frampton, who steadied himself, took advantage of a two low-blow fouls on the 22-year-old challenger and rolled to a unanimous-decision victory.
When he slips through the ropes in Austin, Gonzalez will be in action for just the second time this year after taking four fights in 2014. That started with a nine-round, technical-decision loss to Juan Alberto Rosas, who was accidentally cut over his right eye and unable to continue.
That result ended Gonzalez’s 22-fight winning streak that kicked off his career, but he bounced back by winning his final three bouts of 2014, starting with a second-round KO of Javier Franco.
Like Gonzalez, Guerfi also was dominant to start his career, winning his first 18 bouts. Since then, the 28-year-old Frenchman is just 4-3, although he is coming off consecutive victories over Oscar Trujillo (a first-round KO in November) and Arnoldo Solano (eight-round unanimous decision in June).
Guerfi will have the experience edge in this one, having been fighting professionally since 2006, four years before Gonzalez made his debut. However, this will mark Guerfi’s first-ever contest in America, while Gonzalez—whose first 27 bouts were held in his native Mexico—will be working on U.S. soil for the second straight fight.
The show begins on Fox Sports 1 at 9 p.m. Let’s get back into boxing after our big layoff. It’ll be nice to watch grown men punch each other in the face instead of all this football we’ve been watching.
