The Year of the Bellinger: Dodgers’ Cody is Excelling on Offense, Defense

Richard Mackson-USA TODAY Sports

Scott Van Pelt was among the many in sports media to express heartfelt condolences on the passing of Bill Buckner. Van Pelt’s One Big Thing last night was dedicated to Buckner and centered on the unfair way he was portrayed by both media and fans alike. Only two active players have more hits than Buckner accumulated over the course of his career, and he is 66th all-time on that list.

The Fresno Grizzlies are in some hot water today. The Pacific Coast League affiliate of the Washington Nationals aired a video that took a turn for the worse on Memorial Day. This video was supposed to celebrate America and the veterans that laid down their lives for our country, but later on there were some troubling images equating New York congresswoman Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez with dictators Kim Jong-un and Fidel Castro. The team profusely apologized to the congresswoman and stated that no one fully vetted the video before playing it yesterday.

Max Scherzer has not been getting much help this year. The three-time Cy Young Award winner is not pitching at an elite level, but he has pitched rather well and should not have a 2-5 record. He has seen a lot of leads blown by his bullpen, and the below graphic shows that his work has been wasted far too often. Scherzer has allowed 75 hits in 77.1 innings, and he is on pace to lead the National League in strikeouts for the fourth consecutive season.

Cody Bellinger is off to an incredible start this season. The Dodgers slugger is leading the National League in a number of categories, and the 23-year-old has taken a huge step forward in his third year. Bellinger was the 2017 NL Rookie of the Year, but he regressed last year as pitchers caught up to him. He has turned that around this season with an NL leading 1.229 OPS through 52 games.
