Goodwin Lives Up to His Name to Win $1 Million, Lorenzen Having Health Issues

The inaugural 40 Yards of Gold event was held last night in south Florida, and Marquise Goodwin walked away with $1 million after besting the field in a single-elimination bracket style tournament. The San Francisco 49ers wide receiver was somehow not the betting favorite despite having the best credentials of any athlete in the field. Goodwin was a track star at the University of Texas, and he ended up competing in the 2012 Summer Olympics. He ran a 4.27 40-yard dash at the 2013 NFL scouting combine, and he has been known as one of the game’s best speedsters during his six-year NFL career.

Ted Ginn Jr. was the favorite to win 40 Yards of Gold, but the New Orleans Saints wide receiver no-showed the event. Ginn had been the first to hype the event by going on a local radio station to say that he would race anyone anywhere for $10,000, bringing challengers out of the woodwork and attention to this event when it was formally announced a few days later. However, when push came to shove, Ginn decided not to bother with the event, and no explanation has been given for his absence. Denver Broncos running back Khalfani Muhammad was Ginn’s last minute replacement, and Muhammad did well enough to qualify for the semifinals.

Former New York Giants quarterback Jared Lorenzen was a beloved back-up during his time in the league. He won a Super Bowl as a member of the Giants, and was one of the most unique quarterback prospects we’ve seen. His size led to a number of jovial nicknames, but there are growing concerns that his size may have had a serious impact on his health. Lorenzen is reportedly in the hospital dealing with a number of medical problems, and the issues seem serious. Here’s hoping that Lorenzen makes a full recovery.
