Hyun-Jin Ryu was picked to start the All-Star Game for the National League and all of the All-Star reserves were chosen Sunday, giving the July 9 game in Cleveland almost complete rosters. Across the pond, the Yankees scored nine runs in the seventh inning and dealt the Red Sox a demoralizing European sweep. Elsewhere, police said a suspected drug trafficker offered just $30,000 in the hit that eventually wounded former Red Sox slugger David Ortiz. Back on the field, the Cubs were dealt a controversial loss and Max Scherzer continued a dominant June for the Nationals.
There are plenty of All-Star reserves, but in part because of the rule that says every team must have at least one, teams like the Padres had a couple of snubs.
The Padres have no position-player reserves on the National League All-Star team. Hunter Renfroe, Fernando Tatis Jr. and Manny Machado all miss out. Looks like Kirby Yates will be the Padres’ only All-Star.
