Mike McCarthy’s cancerous impact on the Green Bay Packers has finally hit them in the bank account. A couple of bad years, hiring a new head coach and big contracts have affected the team’s bottom line as they reported just $724,000 in profits for the fiscal year of 2018.
That’s down from $34.1 million the previous year and $75 million in 2016.
Key number from annual @packers financial report: $274 million. It is the national distribution to each team, before they even turn the lights on. Player Salary Cap was $180 million. These are salad days for NFL owners.

Quarterback Aaron Rodgers’ $134 million, four-year contract was a contributor to that decline. The team is also pointing at free agent deals for Za’Darius Smith, Adrian Amos, Billy Turner and Preston Smith.
Not only did the team have to buy out McCarthy, they had to fork over new cash for head coach Matt LaFleur.
Team president Mark Murphy knows all it takes to get back to forklifts of cash is victories.
“If we can get back to the playoffs and get to the Super Bowl, that always helps,” Murphy said. “We have a policy regarding our season-ticket pricing. We want to be just below the league average. We don’t want everything to be on the backs of our season-ticket holders.”
Jim Caldwell taking leave of absence from Dolphins
Citing health issues, assistant head coach Jim Caldwell will take a season-long leave of absence from the Miami Dolphins. Caldwell will now serve as a team consultant for the 2019 season.
“I will be stepping back due to some medical complications that require my full attention,” Caldwell said. “I want to thank Stephen Ross, Chris Grier, Coach Flores and the rest of the organization for the support they have given me and my family.”
#Dolphins assistant head coach and QB coach Jim Caldwell will take a leave of absence to address health issues, the team says. Caldwell will serve as a consultant to the team for the 2019 season. Jerry Schuplinski, a respected QB voice from New England, will take on a big role.

Dolphins head coach Brian Flores released his own statement on Caldwell.
“Our focus is on Jim’s health and supporting him in every way that we can,” Flores said. “With his knowledge and experience, Jim has been an invaluable member to our coaching staff and will continue to serve as a sounding board for me throughout the season.”
