NFL News: Patriots and Bears Add Key Players to PUP

Sony Michel Patriots
Matthew Emmons-USA TODAY Sports

There’ll be no practice work for the New England Patriots Isaiah Wynn, running back Sony Michel and wide receiver Demaryius Thomas will all start the preseason on the physically unable to perform list.

Michel recently had his knee scoped a little over two weeks ago. He’s expected to be ready for the start of the regular season at worst. Thomas tore his Achilles last season and, though signed in the offseason, would only cost $150,000 on New England’s cap if they cut him. He’ll need to work his way into the line up in a hurry to keep a job.

The Patriots did get some good news. After missing all of last season with a torn Achilles of his own, offensive tackle Isaiah Wynn will be full go at training camp. Wynn and Michel were both 2018 first round picks for New England. The Pats grabbed Wynn at the No. 23 pick, acquired from the Los Angeles Rams in a trade for Brandin Cooks and then picked Michel at No. 31.

Michel played in 13 games last season, started eight and rushed for 931 yards, six touchdowns and averaged 4.5 yards per carry. He caught seven passes for 50 yards.

In addition to Michel and Thomas, offensive tackle Cole Croston, safety Nate Ebner, defensive end Deatrich Wise Jr. and cornerback Ken Webster will all open camp with a PUP designation.

Clinton-Dix on PUP with Bears

Ha Ha Clinton-Dix’s Chicago Bears debut will have to wait. He’ll open the preseason on the PUP list after suffering a knee injury in the team’s offseason program.

Chicago also placed offensive lineman T.J. Clemmings and defensive lineman Jonathan Harris on the list.

Clinton-Dix played for the Packers and Redskins last season after a trade. He recorded 93 tackles, one for a loss, two forced fumbles, one fumble recovery, six passes defended and three interceptions
