NFL News: Patriots Trade for Russell Bodine and More

Vinatieri Colts

There will be no chances taken with 42-year-old Tom Brady’s protection in New England. Just two days after trading the Baltimore Ravens for Jermaine Eluemunor, the Patriots worked the Moneyball lines again, this time grabbing center Russell Bodine from their AFC rival Buffalo Bills.

Both moves come after starting center David Andrews was hospitalized with blood clots in his lungs. There’s no timetable for his return.

Bodine got 10 starts with Buffalo last year after coming over as a free agent from the Cincinnati Bengals.

Earlier in the week, New England added offensive tackle Korey Cunningham in a trade with the Arizona Cardinals.

Raiders will keep Rodney Hudson with three-year extension

Rodney Hudson joined the Oakland Raiders three years ago after starting his career with the Kansas City Chiefs. Now the team has locked him in for three years more.

Friday, Hudson and the Raiders agreed on a thee-year, $33.75 million extension. He is now the NFL’s highest paid center. The deal comes with $24.4 million in guaranteed cash.

Hudson was originally a second round pick by the Chiefs in 2011. He took over as their full time starter in 2013 and has missed just three games total since, none with Oakland.

Jim Langer, center for ’72 Miami Dolphins, dies at 71

The Pro Football Hall of Fame lost another alumni as Miami Dolphins great Jim Langer passed away Friday. He was 71 years old.

“The entire Pro Football Hall of Fame mourns the passing of Jim Langer,” HoF president David Baker said in a statement. “He lived an incredible life. From a free agent to a Bronzed Bust, Jim’s selfless sacrifice, perseverance and never giving up on his goal are important life lessons that can inspire us all. He was the ultimate teammate. His contributions to this game, especially how integral he was to the Miami Dolphins’ sustained success throughout the 1970s, will live forever in Canton, Ohio where the Hall of Fame flag now flies at half-staff in his memory.”

Lander was a four-time All Pro, a six time Pro Bowler and a first-ballot Hall of Famer in 1987. He won two Super Bowls with the Dolphins, most notably Super Bowl VII, where Miami completed the only undefeated season in NFL history, going 17-0.
