Here are analyst William Whelan’s Weekend Picks to Click for the college basketball calendar:
No. 23 Xavier vs. USC
The Trojans announced their arrival to the college basketball world with a win over a depleted Wichita State team thanks to the play of Bennie Boatwright and Jordan McLaughlin. If those two can continue their high level of play, USC might finally have some traction under Andy Einfield. Trevon Bluiett, for the Musketeers, has been tremendous so far, and Xavier is on a roll. Right now, we’ve got a matchup between two undefeated squads, both the ability to put up some impressive offensive numbers. Overall, I like Xavier and their veterans’ ability to handle success.
Prediction: Xavier 79, USC 72
No. 17 Notre Dame vs. Iowa
Losing to Monmouth isn’t exactly what Notre Dame had in mind for the AdvoCare Invitational, giving the Hawks their first ever win over an AP Top 25 squad. Demetrius Jackson has been sensational this season, while Zach Auguste has averaged a double-double. Thus, it’s reasonable to think that the loss was a mere blip on the radar. Jarrod Uthoff is off to a dynamic start for the Hawkeyes, and the team as a whole is shooting 44-percent from beyond the arc, making them dangerous on any given night and at any given time.
Prediction: Notre Dame 82, Iowa 76
No. 11 Arizona vs. Providence
How will Sean Miller corral star point guard and do-it-all threat Kris Dunn? The Wildcats have gotten good play out of Gabe York and even Parker Jackson-Cartwright–but their frontcourt hasn’t lived up to expectations outside of Ryan Anderson. Providence’s depth is a concern on the perimeter, but they’re getting great minutes from their wings and bigs. The question is whether or not they’re ready for a well oiled machine like Arizona.
Prediction: Providence 78, Arizona 74
