Joe Girardi could be back in New York next season, according to a Bleacher Report article published on Saturday.

The former Yankees manager has an interview coming up for the Chicago Cubs job, but Jon Heyman of MLB Network tweeted that the club is “more likely to stay in house” while the Mets search is wide open. He also cites that Mets fans’ clamoring for Girardi as another reason the two are linked.

It seems like a natural fit for both sides. Girardi spent 10 years managing the cross-town rival Yankees and knows what it takes to win in New York (just ask his World Series ring). He would have the opportunity to manage a young Mets team that’s on the come up and has a plethora of young talent such as Pete Alonso, Jacob DeGrom, Marcus Stroman, and Amed Rosario. Their 86 wins in 2019 was the most they’ve had in three years, so it’s not like Girardi would be walking into a rebuilding situation if he were to get the job.

Girardi’s resume speaks for itself. He is 988-794 in 11 seasons as a manger, won the World Series in 2009, and won manager of the year in 2006. He has been out of baseball since 2017 since leaving the Yankees, and his return is long overdue.
