If you like sports and things, this is a post for you.
Thanks to Sports Illustrated’s MLB wing of twitter, we have Gary Sheffield. Last we saw Sheffield, he was 40-years old and playing out his final season with the New York Mets in 2009. While doing the math, you realize Gary is now 51-years old.
As you watch the video below, you will also realize that he’s still striking the baseball with reckless abandon. Also, he’s smoking a cigar while doing so which is probably the reason I elected to go with this material at all. Honestly, if you’re hitting batting practice bombs while smoking a cigar; it’s good enough for me to give it some run.

Sheffield’s playing career began in Milwaukee all the way back in 1988 at the age of 19. Then some 509 home runs later and after stints in Los Angeles, Atlanta, New York, Florida, and Detroit; he retired. Since then he’s been talked about very little.
It’s good to see that Sheffield is enjoying retirement – and if you’re smoking cigars and blasting baseballs over a chain-length fence – you’re really enjoying it.
I always enjoyed Sheffield, particularly during his San Diego days of 1992 when he hit .330 as a 23-year old young slugger. I could never really understand why he couldn’t find a permanent home. Constantly I attempted to mimic his bat waggle, which only ruined my little league statistics for that particular game or week.
Finally, it’s worth waking up to on a Tuesday morning seeing Gary doing well and hitting some cigar-smoking bombs for all of us to enjoy. Shine on you crazy diamond.
