Tigers trade Robbie Grossman to the Braves

The Braves have announced a deal to acquire Robbie Grossman from the Tigers, expanding their outfield. Kris Anglin, a pitcher for a minor league team, is returning to Detroit.

For Braves head of baseball operations Alex Anthopoulos and his team, the circumstance is not unfamiliar. At the prior season’s trade deadline, Atlanta made a number of less expensive outfield acquisitions and later enjoyed the benefits with strong second halves from players like Eddie Rosario and Jorge Soler. Of course, they would love it if Grossman could provide anything approximating that level of output, but the seasoned outfielder is having a difficult 2022 season.

Grossman has a.205/.313/.282 slash over 320 plate appearances with just two home runs. He continues to draw walks at a respectable rate of 11.9 percent, although that rate is lower than it was at 14.6 percent in 2017. The Braves, though, are placing their faith in his more reliable track record. Time will tell if this is a smart gamble or not.
