After ten years in the minors, Wynton Bernard makes his MLB debut

Ten years after being selected by the San Diego Padres, Wynton Bernard finally had the opportunity to play in the major leagues, and he made the most of it. On Friday, Triple-A Albuquerque picked Bernard’s contract for the Colorado Rockies. In the first game of a three-game series against the Arizona Diamondbacks, he batted seventh and started in center field. He finished the game with a single, a stolen base, and a run scored as the Rockies prevailed 5-3.

 

Before the game, Bernard remarked, “It’s a wonderful time. I’ve been playing for many years, and now I’m here. It’s incredible.” After being selected by the Padres in the 35th round of the 2012 draft, 31-year-old Bernard played three seasons in their minor league system. Along with stops in the Mexican Winter League, Venezuelan Winter League, and independent ball, he also played in the minor leagues for Detroit, San Francisco, and the Chicago Cubs. He had also participated in the Australian Baseball League in the past.
