Boxing Odds for Copper Box Arena on January 30 – Groves Headlines

The main drawing card on the show is George Groves (21-3), the popular Super Middleweight who is facing Italy’s Andrea Di Luisa (18-3). Groves made a name for himself with a pair of fights against Carl Froch, the last of which filled Wembley Stadium, and he is looking to get back into the winning column in this fight.  He last fought in September, 2014 when he traveled to Las Vegas to face Badou Jack for the WBC World belt at Super Middleweight, and he came away with a bitter Split Decision loss. Groves, who is still just 27 years old, must feel he is in the world title picture based on his performance against Jack, and this is a showcase fight for him. Di Luisa has just this type of job on his resume recently, as in August of last year he served as the opposition for Lucien Bute after he returned from a long layoff.

Hearn, the biggest promoter on the British Isles and certainly an international player in the boxing business, is sometimes quite shameless about his matchmaking when he needs to get one of his fighters a win.  The line for this fight sees Groves favored massively.  Four figure lines are often a good indicator of weak or uneven matchmaking.

A return fight for Groves in this setting is understandable to a certain extent, but Groves also will need to perform. If he does his job the way he should in this fight, then he will certainly be looking for a more marquee-named opponent for his next outing.

A pair of 12 round bouts with regional titles at stake serve as co-features.  Here, the lines at the sport books hint at more competitive fights.

Commonwealth Super Lightweight Champion John Wayne Hibbert defends his belt against the young and talented Tommy Martin. Hibbert is 10 years older than the 21 year old Martin, and he is coming off a three fight series with rival Dave Ryan that saw him go 1-2.  Though Martin’s resume does not have any real names, he still enters the fight a slight betting favorite as he has held the British title at Super Lightweight and he also won the vacant WBA Continental title.

At Middleweight, John Ryder (21-2) takes on tough Russian Sergey Khomitsky (30-12-3) for the vacant WBA International title.  Ryder has a tight decision loss to current world champion Billy Joe Saunders back in 2013, but he lost in May of 2015 to Nick Blackwell on a regional level.  Khomitsky is a real trial horse, having been in there with big names such as Martin Murray (twice), Robert Steiglitz and Gennady Golovkin.
