Weekend Boxing Odds – Thursday

Bangkok, Thailand plays host to an interim WBA World Title fight in the Minimumweight division as “Knockout Freshmart” defends his belt against Carlos Buitrago of Nicaragua. The 11-0 Freshmart took the belt from Buitrago in a hard fought contest back in October of 2014, and he has defended the belt twice since. Now, Buitrago (28-1-1) returns to Thailand to try to win the belt back. The first fight ended after twelve rounds with a close unanimous decision that saw all three judges give the fight to Freshmart by scores of 115-113.

This fight has the most competitive line of the weekend, and also includes over/under action.

Weekend Boxing Odds – Friday

From Minimumweights on Thursday to Heavyweights on Friday, the sport books are looking at the Johann Duhaupas vs Marcelo Luis Nascimento 10 round bout scheduled for Monte Carlo. Duhaupas (32-3) is coming off the highest profile fight of his career, as he faced Deontay Wilder for the WBC World Heavyweight title this past September. That fight saw him get stopped for the first time in his career, though it took Wilder until the 11th round to do it. Nascimento (18-11) has a lot of big names on his resume, and he has lost every one of those fights.  Duhaupas is entering this fight a big favorite.

A higher profile comes with a pair of fights at the Fantasy Springs Casino in Indio, California. Oscar De La Hoya and his Golden Boy Promotions are hosting a card that is set to showcase two of the company’s blue chip prospects on Estrella TV.

Undefeated 19-0 welterweight Frankie Gomez takes on veteran Silverio Ortiz (34-16) of Mexico. Gomez comes with a huge amateur resume, and he ha remained undefeated since turning pro five years ago.  This year should be a step up year for Gomez, who GBP has big plans for. This fight however, is not a step-up fight as he has faced fighters such as Ortiz before and this cannot be considered a challenge.

Further along the learning curve is 22-0 Randy Caballero, who is returning to face 15-1-1 Ruben Garcia. Caballero is fighting at Super Bantamweight for the first time in his career and he is coming off a layoff of over a year. His resume includes capturing the IBF World Bantamweight title, but he was unable to defend the belt because he could not make weight against Lee Haskins. This fight is his low risk return before looking to move on to bigger fights in an exciting Super Bantamweight division.

Golden Boy reserves their Estrella TV broadcasts to feature their up and coming talent, and both Gomez and Caballero have probably outgrown the format.  Barring an unseen loss by either man, the next time you see both fighters will likely be on the under card of one of Golden Boy’s full-blown big events.
