Lucha Underground S1E2 Recap: New Faces, 1,000 Deaths

Photo from El Rey Network

Lucha Underground is currently in Season Two, but for those of you who missed the first season, we’re catching you up. It’s worth going back and watching so that you know the characters and the storylines. If you have not watched any Lucha Underground and would like to follow along in the recaps, you can read the recap of the debut episode here.

Lucha Underground had an impressive Season 1 debut episode, and will have to do a lot to follow it up. Will Chavo Guerrero redeem himself for losing to Blue Demon Jr last week? Who are the men that attacked Johnny Mundo and Prince Puma, and who is Dario Cueto’s new luchador?

Opening Segment
The show starts off with the three men who jumped Prince Puma and Johnny Mundo at the end of the last episode. According to Cortez Castro (one of the three), they are here to beat people up and take their money. The other two introduce themselves as Cisco and The Boss (formerly Ezekiel Jackson in the WWE), and Big Ryck.

Johnny Mundo comes out and attacks Castro and Cisco, while Big Ryck leaves the ring. Prince Puma enters to come help Mundo, and Dario Cueto, the owner and promoter of Lucha Underground, turns this fight into an official sanctioned match.

Prince Puma & Johnny Mundo vs. Cortez Castro & Cisco
Mundo and Puma have, as Matt Striker puts it, a very refined move set. They have been in the business and are very fluid and flashy in the ring. However, Castro and Cisco are more ground-and-pound brawlers. Nothing they doing is necessarily pretty, but it is effective.

So far, Lucha Underground has been constantly giving Pay-Per-View quality matches, which is either a testament to their talent, their desire to make a statement, or both.

Johnny Mundo hits a modified swinging neckbreaker for the win. Winners: Johnny Mundo & Prince Puma

Backstage Segment
Konnan advises Prince Puma to stay away from Johnny Mundo, because they are not fighting the same fight. Konnan says that he should be the only friend of Puma’s.

Video Package
We get a glimpse at Mil Muertes, who was hyped up by Dario Cueto last week. Matt Striker and Vampiro mention that his name translates to 1,000 deaths. There was not a lot of footage shown of him, so we’ll find out more about him in his match later on.

Son of Havoc & Ivelisse vs. Chavo Guerrero, Jr. & Sexy Star
Even in Lucha Underground, the commentators put over Chavo’s uncle Eddie more than him.

Striker and Vampiro note that in most mixed gender matches, the men wrestle the men and the women wrestle the women. But in Lucha Underground, gender does not matter, and it’s all about the competition. Lucha Underground doesn’t necessarily need to show women vs. men to prove that they treat women equally, but it works, and is making more of a statement than WWE’s “#DivasRevolution”.

Chavo Guerrero hits the frog splash and tags in Sext Star who then rolls up Son of Havoc for the win, making up for both of their losses last week. Winners: Chavo Guerrero & Sexy Star

Backstage Segment
Blue Demon Jr is preparing for his match tonight against Mil Muertes, when Muertes’s associate, Catrina, pays him a visit. Catrina (formerly Maxine in WWE NXT) licks Blue Demon Jr, giving him “a taste before 1,000 deaths.”

Blue Demon, Jr. vs. Mil Muertes (w/Catrina)
When the crowd gets excited for a match, like this one, they chant “Lucha,” which makes me wonder if WWE ripped off the chant to give it to their current United States Champion, Kalisto.

Right out of the gate Muertes is dominating Blue Demon Jr, which was not expected after Demon defeated Chavo Guerrero last week. Blue Demon Jr. gets some offense in, but to no avail, as Mil Muertes picks up the victory. Winner: Mil Muertes

After the match, Muertes starts attacking Blue Demon Jr while he’s down, and Chavo Guerrero comes out with a chair. What was seeming an attempt to save Blue Demon Jr, Chavo Guerrero instead starts hitting him with the chair, as well as some more luchadores who come out to stop him. Even Sexy Star, Guerrero’s partner earlier in the night, comes out to plead that he stops, but he hits her with the chair as well. Blue Demon Jr. gets taken out on a stretcher, and Guerrero still beats on him while he’s getting taken away. Chavo Guerrero has definitely made a statement to end this episode of Lucha Underground.
