Once again, Bellator put on its very own special sort of event, as we got Royce Gracie, Ken Shamrock, and Kimbo Slice on all one card. So, without further ado, here are the Bellator 149 results.
In the main event, Royce Gracie denied Ken Shamrock his closure as he defeated Shamrock via TKO in the first round. A victory that was, however, steeped in controversy.
After the referee waved off the fight, Shamrock immediately started bellowing that he had been the recipient of an illegal knee to the groin, something that replays confirmed.
Shamrock was clearly livid, screaming at Gracie that he was a cheat who had delivered the knee on purpose.
Gracie was unapologetic post-fight, saying “I’m a fighter. I’m here to fight. We come from the beginning when there were no rules.”
Shamrock, who apologised for losing his temper, was lost for words.
“I’m disappointed,” Shamrock said. “I came here to fight, and I was ready to go however long it went. I don’t know what else to say.
“I really wanted this.”
In the co-main event of the evening, and the reason why the event has received so much attention in the lead up to tonight, Kimbo Slice took on nemesis Dada 5000. The two have gone back and forth over the last week or so, with Slice accusing Dada (real name Dhafir Harris) of stealing his image, while Harris suggested Slice (real name Kevin Ferguson) had left his roots.
In the end, the talk meant nothing. Over the course of three rounds, MMA fans were ‘treated’ to one of the worst fights in televised combat sports history. Kimbo Slice, looking every day (and a few extra) his 52 years appeared to run out of energy in two minutes. Dada 5000 lasted maybe a minute more.
In what was supposedly going to be a flurrying-fists whirlwind turned into two men using the each other to hold themselves up. At one point, Slice fell to the floor out of exaustion. Harris was forced to stand by the referee on several occasions. The fight was stood up while Slice was in mount. All in all, it was a shambles.
In the end Slice won by TKO. Whether Harris fell down from the punches or because he was tired is still undetermined.
Elsewhere on the card, Light Heavyweight Linton Vassell defeated Emanuel Newton in an emphatic performance. In an odd fight, where both men wore the same shorts and Newton gave Vassell three low blows before having a point taken by the referee.
Truthfully, Newton looked out of sorts from the beginning, showing poor timing and lacklustre footwork. No telling what that could mean.
In the first fight of the night, and probably the most evenly contested on paper, was a Featherweight bout between Daniel Pineda and Emmanuel Sanchez. Mostly taking place on the ground, the fight eventually became a question of cardio, with Sanchez able to have the higher output of attacks as the fight went on.
Pineda fought bravely, escaping from a rear naked choke attempt and out of full mount in the last minute, but it wasn’t to be. Despite Pineda previously only going to judge’s decision four times in his career, Sanchez ended up with the split-decision win.
In the main event of the prelims, Justin “The Big Pygmy” Wren defeated opponent Juan Torres by unanimous decision. Despite being largely a snoozer, the fight stood out for Torres’s bizarre behaviour. Spending his time in between rounds asking referee Big John McCarthy if they could get a picture after the bout, and then shouting at Wren “I want a t-shirt.”
Wren’s victory, however lacklustre, does help him acheive his admirable goal of drawing attention to the plight of pygmies in the Congo, (incidentally, check out his charity work at http://www.water4.org/fightfortheforgotten).
