Kansas winning the Big 12 title once again looks to be a reality we’re all just going to have to accept, even if it feels like Groundhog Day…for the twelfth time in a row. Yes, with three games remaining and two of them at home, not to mention a two-game lead in the standings, who’s ready to bet against Bill Self?
With so much of the Big 12 discussion focused around the brilliance of Buddy Hield, disappointment of Iowa State, and the emergence of Texas Tech, it almost feels like we’ve forgotten about the conference’s top program in a year where they’re ranked No. 2 in the country and, at this time, look like a real national title contender.
What makes this group special is their composure. The trio of Frank Mason III, Perry Ellis, and yes, even Wayne Selden Jr., rarely get rattled–even if they’re not always on, they have enough veteran savvy to withstand runs, calls from officials, and big time pressure moments. If winning in the NCAA Tournament is all about guard play, there’s a lot worse a team could do than Mason III, Selden Jr., and Devonte’ Graham.
This Jayhawks group probably has the least amount of star power of Self’s KU squads, especially when you consider that Landen Lucas isn’t just contributing, but he’s starting. Still, they find a way to make it work.
Kansas winning the Big 12 is not a new thing, but Bill Self continues to redefine the way he builds his winners. This year, it just might be the recipe to win him another NCAA title.
