Amanda Nunes edges out game Schevchenko

Expert strikers Amanda Nunes and Valentina Schevchenko spent several moments striking, but also grappling with each other. Schevchenko offered virtually zero offense in the opening around, and allowed Nunes to land kicks on the outside. Nunes later dominated the bout on the mat with trip takedowns and hard ground-and-pound. A rear-naked choke attempt almost resulted in an early night for Schevchenko, but fought through and later won the third round. Nunes then campaigned for a title shot in her post-fight interview. Not a spectacular win for Nunes, but a solid win nonetheless.

Corey Anderson decisions Lawlor

It didn’t come easily, but Corey “Beastin’ 25/8” Anderson fought through adversity to capture a unanimous decision victory. Lawlor came out guns blazing, and had Anderson on his heels early, but Anderson regained himself and went on to out-strike and out-wrestle Lawlor. Anderson’s quick right straight landed to great effect, and was ultimately the quicker athlete in the Octagon. Lawlor began to fade, and a late takedown by Anderson gave him the edge on the scorecards. Two of the scorecards read 30-27, which I found to be absolutely ridiculous considering Lawlor dealt lots of damage in the first round, but nevertheless, Anderson gains the UD win.

Ilir Latifi outpoints Villante

In a gritty, hard-fought 15 minutes, Swede’s Ilir Latifi did what he had to do to capture the decision win. Latifi swung overhand hammers at Villante and continually pressured for takedown attempts. Villante stayed threatening with hard kicks to the leg, body, and head, but Latifi was game and overall dished out more output throughout the course of the bout. Latifi picked up some big slams as well. It wasn’t Latifi’s best performance, but a decent win for him nonetheless.

Miesha Tate rallies, submits Holm in round 5

And just like that, we have a new women’s bantamweight champion! Miesha Tate found big success in round two when she was able to take Holly down, get her back, and nearly get the rear-naked choke. But this success would only come one more time from then until the fifth round. Holm continually landed side kicks, left hands, and stuffed Tate’s takedown attempts. However, one takedown attempt from Tate in the fifth round – in a fight she was losing – resulted in Tate getting the back of Holm in a scramble. From there, Tate wrapped up the choke and forced Holm to pass out

Diaz scores upset, chokes out Conor McGregor

Wow. And there goes McGregor’s notorious UFC run. It couldn’t have started better for the Irishman either. Conor consistently found the home for his left hand on Diaz’s faces, and left the Stockton-native battered and bloodied. More of the same was on deck for Diaz until a single one-two combination changed the tide. Conor’s legs buckled, and immediately he didn’t look himself. Diaz poured it on and sapped the energy out of Conor with his Stockton slap. Conor shot for a sloppy takedown attempt, and after escaping a guillotine, wound up on his back. Diaz mounted him, took the back, and got with the rear-naked choke.
