People down in Wichita can count on a long week and a hectic Selection Sunday now that their Wichita State Shockers are on the edge of the NCAA Tournament bubble, largely thanks to their loss in the MVC semifinals on Saturday.
Yes, Wichita State fell to Northern Iowa for the second-straight time, this time 57-52, to put their tournament hopes in jeopardy and cause the committee to take a long, hard look at their resume to determine if this team has what it takes to warrant an at-large bid.
We’ve talked at length about this team and whether or not they’re worthy of a bid at all. From the losses they suffered without senior point guard Fred Van Vleet, to the losses they suffered once he returned, the Shockers simply don’t have a resume that inspires a whole lot of confidence in anyone hoping they hear their name called next Sunday.
Their RPI has settled within the top 50, sure, but their record against the RPI top 100 is what becomes so concerning when assessing whether or not this team has a chance on Selection Sunday. They’re 4-7 against the top 100 with just one of those wins being in the top 50. Ultimately, their profile simply doesn’t have the strength to hold up against other at-large hopefuls, but it will be interesting to see whether or not the committee agrees. Name recognition could go a long way here.
